Detailed Portraits of Tahiti’s Third Gender by Kehinde Wiley Challenge Gaugin’s Problematic Depictions

American artist Kehinde Wiley (previously) has unveiled a new series of paintings of Tahiti’s Māhū community, a group of Polynesians classified as a third gender between male and female. Presented at Galerie Templon in Paris, the colorful portrait series challenges a collection of 20th century works by Paul Gauguin, removing elements that Wiley considers problematic and exploitative side effects of colonialism. Wiley takes issues with Gauguin’s depictions of the Māhū for being unrealistic fantasies that sexually objectify the community for the sake of his White audience back home. More

Fans and enthusiasts of the popular HBO television series “Game of Thrones” will now have a chance to win 1500 Euros by submitting their ideas in a Game of Thrones (GoT) inspired architecture contest by the non-profit organization “Non Architecture Competitions.” The competition opens June 1, 2019.The contest “GoT Architecture 21st Century” is the latest in their three-year-long run of competitions. The London Festival of Architecture Opens June 1

The 15th edition of the “London Festival of Architecture” (LFA), the world’s biggest annual architecture festival, will commence on June 1, 2019. The theme this year for the month long show is  ‘Boundaries.’“We’ll open the doors to iconic tours, architectural installations, and stunning brick creations; energetic debates to Studio Lates; workshops in extraordinary spaces and tours of new places; exhibitions and bespoke artistic commissions; political discussions and lots of new construction — the London Festival of Architecture has something for everyone,” the event’s official press note read. The theme ‘Boundaries’ will be approached from many different viewpoints in the events — from physical boundaries found in the city to the hidden gender and privilege boundaries that many architects face in the industry.“Our theme for this year’s festival is ‘Boundaries’ — we feel there could hardly be a more appropriate theme for us to explore this year. Our Core Programme brings together the events that respond in interesting or novel ways to this theme. Our wider fringe programme brings together a huge range of other events that respond to many of the other aspects of architecture and our city,” the organization said.A total of more than 400 events will take place throughout the month of June, and include shows of several genres — exhibition, installation, talks, workshops, family events, walking tours. Highlight of the festival will be events such as a ‘migration walk’ in East London, a ‘comedy safari’ of classic Londoner experiences and a seance at the John Soanes-designed Pitzhanger Manor. Much focus will be given on group interaction and public engagement. The LFA will have four festival hubs — the City of London; London Bridge; the Royal Docks; and the ‘Heart of London’ covering St James’s, Piccadilly Circus and Leicester Square.  https://www.blouinartinfo.com/              Founder: Louise Blouin

Gustafson Porter + Bowman to Redesign Eiffel Tower Parks

British landscape architecture studio Gustafson Porter + Bowman has been selected to redesign the square-mile “grand site” surrounding the Eiffel Tower, Paris, the city’s most iconic space. The announcement comes after a competition for the Site Tour Eiffel project, which the studio Gustafson Porter + Bowman won, beating entries from the likes of Koz Architects, Amanda Levete, and Agence Ter, reports dezeen. The team has been tasked to reimagine the grounds while addressing the issue of crowding and get a pedestrian-friendly design, thus turning it to one of the largest gardens in the city by 2024. The move comes just in time for the next Summer Olympics and Paralympics to be held in Paris.“We would like to thank the City of Paris for having run a competition that has been engaging and educative, challenging, and rewarding,” GP+B responded to the winning announcement. “Thanks to open and ongoing dialogue, the City has played an essential role in stimulating ideas and debate around the proposals for this site. We have never experienced such a responsive approach to competition.”According to the dezeen report, Gustafson Porter + Bowman’s vision is to add more greenery to the areas on either side of the Eiffel Tower. A green corridor will be created at the Place du Trocadero and the Ecole Militaire at the Place Joffre. It will feature an amphitheater at the Trocadero and more public space around the Varsovie Fountains. Pont d’Iena will be turned into a green bridge, and the Champ de Mars will have two new squares and raised lawns. To improve biodiversity around the area, new trees will be planted in One Line’s new parks around the Eiffel Tower.“One evokes the union of two historic landscape typologies: classical French gardens, characterized by major axes that express power; and French picturesque gardens, as places of artistic experimentation,” Gustafson Porter + Bowman said to dezeen. “In this urban landscape, green routes and gardens reserved for creative pursuits frame and soften the central axis.”The $39 million master plan is being planned in phases. The first will be finished by 2023, while the second, more ambitious section, is slated for completion in 2030.  https://www.blouinartinfo.com/              Founder: Louise Blouin

Allbright Opens Mayfair Club with All-Female Art on the Walls

Women-only member’s club Allbright has opened a venue in London’s Mayfair that features artworks made exclusively by female artists across its five floors. It features over 120 works work by more than 80 female artists, all created over the span of the last six decades, reports dezeen.Suzy Hoodless did the interior design for the club, while curator Beth Greenacre chose the artworks. Ranging from work by acclaimed mid-century photographer Diane Arbus’ famous photograph “Headless Woman” (1961) to works of Contemporary artists such as Alexi Marshall, a number of works — old, iconic, and contemporary finds featured in this place. The building used to be the headquarters of an auction house, and the founders of the club wanted it to have a design that reflects its history.“It goes without saying that it’s only female artists. It’s an interesting proposition thinking about female artists and content for a female audience,” said Greenacre to architecture and design magazine Dezeen. “I gave myself the brief of the female figure and artists who have explored the female figure through history.”Greenacre discussed the space with interior designer Hoodless at an early stage to “understand the aesthetic that Suzy’s working toward and her vision” for space. Together they looked at colors, patterns, and materials to ensure that the art responded to the overall design. The brief given to Hoodless by the founders of Allbright was to create an interior that was “feminine but not girly,” which made the female members comfortable but would not alienate their male guests.“Suzy’s aim was to restore the building into an elegant London townhouse using a palette of timber floors and paneled walls which would resonate with the art world in which it resides,” said Anna Jones, co-founder of Allbright. “However, Suzy wanted to emphasize its relevance for women by incorporating traditional suit fabrics, such as fine wools and houndstooth checks into the design, creating a feminine and imaginative twist.”  https://www.blouinartinfo.com/              Founder: Louise Blouin
