Harbin Opera House is a triumph of art

The Harbin Opera House in the landscape along Songhua River built by the MAD Architects is one of the finest examples of modern architecture. Beijing’s MAD group had won the competition in 2010 that was organised to identify the architectural group that could take on the challenging job of transforming the island and making it a centre of attraction. The 850,349-square-foot opera house has been built perfectly across 444 acres of land. The curvilinear external structure is built to withstand extreme rain and snowfall and it is in synchronisation with the surrounding topography.WTKR quoted Ma Yansong, the founder and principal of MAD Architects that the project was undertaken by the group with the idea of integrating the emotional and natural appeal with the latest architectural innovation. The grand theater in the Opera House has a capacity of 1600 while the smaller theatre caters to 400 visitors. Manchurian Ash wood has been used to carve out the grand theater while the smaller auditorium is set against a panoramic view of the world outside. The spiral staircase allows visitors and audiences to climb up and have a breathtaking view of the surrounding areas. The idea of integrating architecture with nature is surely a thing of the future and Harbin Opera House will act as an example to many in the future.Click on the slideshow for a sneak peek into the theater.

‘Green Block’ Reclaims Streets in London

“Green Block,” an innovative greening project by WATG, envisions creative ways to enhance the natural biodiversity of London and other major cities across the globe. “Green Block” is the firm’s response to a challenge posed by London Mayor Sadiq Khan to designate London as the first National Park City. WATG, , led by Demet Karaoglu, has worked in collaboration with Daniel Raven-Ellison, Guerrilla Geographer & Creative Explorer, who is leading the campaign to make London the world’s first NPC.The “Green Block” is envisaged as a maintenance-free 100 percent recyclable modular building, permeated with native wildflower seeds and containing its own irrigation reservoir. With planting that is specific to the UK climate but also adaptable for global use, it can be used in creative ways to enhance the natural biodiversity of London. Some of them include reclaiming expanses of tarmac and space made available by redundant roads and car parks, adding greenery to existing cafes while filtering the city air, thereby creating a more appealing cityscape, connecting the city’s existing parks, and allowing residents and property owners to create their own urban allotments.John Goldwyn, Vice President of Planning and Landscape for WATG said, “Our inspiration was to think about London in the future when there are fewer cars on the road and fewer car lanes.” Mayor Khan has given his full support for London to become a National Park City and plans are in motion for the NPC to be declared in 2018 and launched in 2019, noted World Architecture News.

Maison et Objet 2017 in Paris

The autumn fair season was off to a great start in Paris with Maison et Objet and Paris Design Week. In the exhibition halls, desktop paraphernalia was imagined in many different ways, with exhibitors from Taiwan and China, such as Yen Objects, TA&D, Ey Products, and Kimu, dominating the show. Established companies like Hartô and Pulpo bolstered their collections of furniture with small-scale products, while Minimalux, specialists in small-scale accessories, showcased a host of new items. Pulpo, Tom Dixon, and Ichendorf launched tinted glassware, while new ceramic offerings in mid-century colors and forms were presented by Rig-Tig, Namhee Kim, Zens, and Nicola Tassie. The cooking section saw multiple launches from Merci who teamed up with Serax to produce tabletop ceramics. Paola Navone displayed a collection designed for cooking pasta and Emile Henry launched a set of stoneware cooking pots. Alessi produced a collection of their iconic bowls, dishes, and trays in a special punched brass finish that used Etruscan granulation, an ancient goldsmithing technique. The standout offering at the fair was that of Giobagnara and sister brand Rabitti 1969, which, with Stéphane Parmentier newly at the creative helm, exhibited a new collection of leather furniture and accessories from consoles to poufs, trays of all sizes, and a memory card game, noted Wallpaper.

Zaha Hadid’s Brushes with Fashion

Zaha Hadid’s contribution to the world of architecture is incomparable. Her structures, characterized by fluidity and sweeping strokes offered a whole new perspective of monumentalism. Often called the “Queen of the Curve,” Hadid’s signature creativity made inroads into fashion as well. From clothes to shoes, bags and jewelry, she collaborated with leading luxury brands in every aspect of haute couture. The artistic director of Maison Chanel, Karl Lagerfeld, commissioned a mobile pavilion design from Hadid, on the occasion of the launch of the landmark Matelasse bag. The pavilion told a futuristic story based on contemporary art and conceptualized by the director of Beaux-Arts magazine, Fabrice Bousteau. Hadid worked with Rem D Koolhaas, the man behind the ultramodern footwear brand United Nude, singer Pharrell Williams, and a Brazilian shoe brand called Melissa’s for designs ranging from an advanced shoe finished in steel to a trainer featuring the parametric curves that Hadid was renowned for and an ergonomically designed shoe in wonderful metallic hues.Hadid lent her innovative touch to handbags as well, notes Architectural Digest. She employed numerous layers of painstakingly crafted black leather for the Peekaboo handbag from Fendi and incorporated cut-outs and the LV Monogram in molded plastic for the bucket bag from Louis Vuitton. Her deconstructionist aesthetics found expression in a series of bags featuring sculpted metal clasps, a partnership project with designer Sally Perrin. For Bulgari’s original B.zero 1 collection, the architect devised a design of pivoting gold rings that seemed to float when worn. Hadid passed away on 31 March, 2016 due to a heart attack.Click on the slideshow for a sneak peek at the designs.

A Peek Into the Latest Pinto Paris Collection

Pinto Paris, led by Alberto Pinto and Davina Koskas, is known for creating entirely handmade home furniture and accessories using rare materials. The firm unveiled their latest limited series collection at the recently held PAD London festival. The collection is architectural in spirit and sits well in a modern living room. The wall fabric features a vibrant, colorful city setting the ambiance for the Pinto universe. “Babylone” is a massive bookcase designed to look like a building with a wall made of solid oak bricks, which is both imposing as well as transparent. “Scottie” footstool or end-table in varying shades of amber takes inspiration from the brandy tumbler. “Lodge Table Y” is a dinner table featuring a tinted glass top supported by three brass forks. “Tatou” is a sophisticated small piece of furniture with lines and textures inspired by flora and fauna. A translucent resin is used to create a tortoise shell-like crown for the “Tartaruga” table, which features a brass tray in the center and a bronze base. The collection shows the influence of decorative art and is a tribute to French craftsmanship. For more details, visit: http://www.pintoparis.com/ Click on the slideshow for a sneak peek at the collection.

Barcelona

Penalva has lived in Barcelona for the past seven years and ranks it among the world’s top places to reside. “The city is the right size to get to know people and the international art scene easily,” she says. Barcelona’s other winning qualities include months of warm weather and a wealth of gastronomic delights. Among Barcelona’s native sons are Joan Miró, Antoni Tàpies, and Antoni Gaudí, whose architecture defines the Spanish city. Whether it is Gaudí’s fantastical Park Güell (Carrer d’Olot, 5; parkguell.cat), with its eye-popping colors and surreal passageways, or his magnum opus, the still unfinished Basílica de la Sagrada Família (Carrer de Mallorca, 401; sagradafamilia.org), the architect’s imprint on the landscape is impossible to miss. The towering basilica, which soars nearly 560 feet, is perhaps the world’s most famous construction site: Ground was broken in 1882, and completion is now set for around 2026. Fiercely proud of its role as the capital of Catalonia, an autonomous community with its own distinct language, Barcelona holds an abundance of cultural institutions. Penalva suggests a visit to the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya (Palau Nacional, Parc de Montjuïc; museunacional.cat) to view its trove of Catalan visual art. The museum is located on top of Montjuïc hill, affording spectacular vistas.Taking a break from the cultural itinerary, Penalva recommends the contemporary art space and café Cosmo (Carrer Enric Granados, 3; galeriacosmo.com); the cheesecake, she says, is a must. Those craving dinner with a view won’t be disappointed by the bar and restaurant El Cercle (Carrer dels Arcs, 5; elcerclerestaurant.com). Penalva advises making a reservation ahead of time for a table on its outdoor terrace, right above the Reial Cercle Artístic (Carrer dels Arcs, 5; reialcercleartistic.cat), a private fine arts society that houses a permanent exhibition of works by Catalan Salvador Dalí. Next to the Lluís Domènech i Montaner–designed Palau de la Música Catalana concert hall is Le Cucine Mandarosso (Carrer de Verdaguer i Callís, 4; lecucinemandarosso.com), a restaurant known for its authentic Italian fare with a menu that changes daily according to seasonality and freshness. Locals also flock to Bodega La Palma (Carrer de la Palma de Sant Just, 7; bodegalapalma.com), a wine and tapas bar that originally opened as a grocery store in 1935. Another go-to spot is Belvedere (Passatge de Mercader, 3; bcnrestaurantes.com) which, according to Penalva, serves some of the city’s best cocktails. There is also Boadas Cocktails (Carrer dels Tallers, 1; boadascocktails.com), which makes an expert Negroni. Penalva likes it for being “one of the few authentic bars remaining on Las Ramblas,” the historic pedestrian boulevard.

Saint Laurent’s Feathered Boots: High on Style Quotient

It does not take much time for fashion to reach the streets from the runway. Or should we say Instagram instead of streets! After all, that’s where the high on style Saint Laurent’s feather boots are making waves these days. Some time so. After all, with Naomi Campbell donning a pair of black Saint Laurent feathered heels and her picture going viral on Instagram, our connotation is justified! It wasn’t long back when we were swooning to the swish appearance of feathered boots on the runway during Saint Laurent’s SS 2018 show. The designer Anthony Vaccarello did not take a second to impress the front row stars and the rest of the audience alike. Everyone who caught a sight of the shoes was drooling to own it at the earliest. Many might have rushed to buy a pair. Now we know Naomi was one of them! In the picture doing the rounds on Instagram, Naomi is seen wearing the coveted boots over jeans. The pair of jeans is worn with a white Nike shirt. The shirt is most likely from Riccardo Tisci’s capsule collection for the brand. Before Naomi, it was Rihanna who started the trend of posting Instagram pictures in a pair. Some time ago, she had posted a picture of hers in these yeti boots. She wore the black fluffy knee-length boots. Both the picture and the fashion statement went viral. Since then the feathered boots have made quite a flutter in the fashion circuit. Can we say birds of the same feather (in the boots, maybe) flock together..umm…to discuss fashion, probably!Click on the slideshow for a sneak peek at the boots.
