The latest addition to the Art Series Hotel Group’s portfolio of properties dedicated to and inspired by Australian artists is set to open mid-September. Located only a short distance from Brisbane’s CBD in Spring Hill, The Johnson is dedicated to Sydney-born abstract artist Michael Johnson whose affinity with colour, form, and space has earned him the status of Australia’s pre-eminent master colourist.“Michael Johnson’s work is characterised by the use of intense colours and highly textured surfaces,” said Jane O’Neil, Art Series Hotel Group’s In House Art Curator. “Johnson’s paintings are informed by an expansive engagement with nature, art history and the urban environment and are well suited to the vibrant subtropical landscape of Brisbane.”The hotel occupies the heritage-listed former Main Roads Department building, which was built in 1967 and designed by the Austrian-born modernist architect Karl Langer. The building has been subject to a three-year restoration that combines Langer’s “functional yet flexible” ideology with Johnson’s vision to restore higher levels of daylight, outdoor spaces, and raw materials to the interior look.The Johnson boasts 87 spacious suites, two penthouses a resort style 50m pool and deck bar, state of the art gym, restaurant, two cafes, as well as meeting and events facilities. Johnson’s works are featured throughout the communal spaces and the suites, with visitors able to learn more about Johnson’s work via art tours, in-room art channels, and art libraries. Read more
