“The Optic Cloak” — an architectural masterpiece by British artist Conrad Shawcross will be unveiled on September 21, 2016, as the part of Greenwich Peninsula’s new Low Carbon Energy Centre in London.Commissioned by Knight Dragon and in association with CF Moller Architects, artist Shawcross unites sophisticated engineering with complex optical research to erect this monumental architecture. Drawn from various sources like maritime camouflage, Cubism and Op Art, Conrad constructed this 49-meter high, 20-meter wide and 3-meter deep mammoth structure from aluminum cradling with perforated panels. These triangular panels fold across the surface of the tower forming intricate geometrical patterns that visually break up the flat panes to create an uneven surface structure. This visually ambiguous structure offers different perspectives from different viewing angles. The two main surfaces of the structure will filter daylight to enhance both the form and the visual optic effect, while during the evening, it will be lit up from inside, continuously redefining the structure of its surroundings.Click on the slideshow for a sneak peek of the design Read more
