Delhi — From the Moguls, British to Modern IndiaDelhi is as layered as its past. A melting pot of cultures, the Indian capital is sprinkled with gems underneath its gritty surface. With imposing monuments, magnificent museums and a spirited performing-arts scene, this city has a lot to offer for any first-time visitor. From February 2-5, 2017, the city hosts the India Art Fair. Absorb the arts during the fair and then stroll across the bylanes of Chandni Chowk. Take the golden triangle tour of Delhi, Agra and Jaipur, or watch a Bollywood musical Broadway style at Kingdom of Dreams in Gurgaon. We suggest some places of interest and things to do while you visit the national capital region of India. Delhi BellyThe emergence of amazing regional cuisines ranging from Bengali, Tibetan, Kashmiri, Chettinad, Bihari, Naga, and Assamese make Delhi the most happening food destination in India. Head to ITC Maurya for smooth Dal Bukhara or taste the Chicken Changezi at Daryaganj; for dessert have the frothy winter soufflé Daulat ki Chaat or Doda barfi and jalebis at Nathu’s. Nagpal’s Chole Bhature, flavored Keventer’s milkshake or aaloo chaat at Connaught Place or pocket-friendly thalis of Andhra Bhavan and Tamil Nadu House are also not to be missed.Winter EventsFrom February to March, the famous Mughal Garden in Rashtrapati Bhavan will be open for the public. The sights of tulips in full bloom to sweet-smelling roses, dahlias, carnations, and pansies greet visitors every year. The sprawling lawns spread over 15 acres are home to around 70 varieties of seasonal flowers. Another event during this time of the year is the Surajkund Mela held at Faridabad, near Delhi, during the first fortnight of each February. This festival is a celebration of Indian folk traditions and cultural heritage. From ethnic cuisines, handicrafts and handlooms to open air theaters and folk dances, there is something for everybody to enjoy.History and HeritageThe Mughal Empire still has its traces in India’s capital. Find those peeling remains in the Humayun’s Tomb, which has Persian style architecture surrounded by the gardens sitting on the bank of the Yamuna River. The Qutub Minar complex, Red Fort, Jama Masjid, Lodi Gardens, and India Gate are all worth a visit to admire imposing structures and imagining the bygone era of the Mughal Sultanate and the British Raj. Visit the many museums including the crafts museum, dolls museum, railway museum or hear sufi qawwalis (devotional music) sung at Hazrath Nizamuddin Dargah in the old capital. Shopping If you want the essence of Delhi all in one place, then visit Dilli Haat. This open-air food-and-crafts market is a one-stop shop for regional handicrafts from all over India. Khan Market is another upmarket shopping hub where you find handmade paper, chic garments made from organic fabrics, beautiful crockery and a lot more. For street shopping, Janpath is the best bet. Stores sell shimmering mirrorwork embroidery, colorful shawls from pashminas to silks, Tibetan bric-a-brac, brass products and fancy earrings. There are some good finds if you rummage through the junk. Bargain hard. Quirky Café CultureDelhi has its own free-thinking student population that has its hidden hangout spots at North and South campus or JNU. Engage in deep political discussions here with a plate of simple samosa and chai or steamed momos with banta (lemon soda). For a quirky atmosphere, try Kunzum Travel Café in Hauz Khas Village that has pay-what-you-like policy. At Café Lota in Pragati Maidan, find the contemporary versions of several regional Indian dishes for example, Quinoa Upma and Apple Cinnamon Jalebi. Café Turtle, on the other hand, is a cute, little place located on the upper level of Full Circle Bookstore in Khan Market — a great hangout for book lovers.Click on the slideshow for a sneak peek at Delhi Read more
