The Chicago based Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) is extending its focus on China’s high-rise segment. The CTBUH’s move comes after the Chinese government recently made waves in the international press with a ban on “grandiose and weird Western architecture.” The Chinese decision was criticized passionately by artist and activist Ai Weiwei and defended by his Beijing Olympic Stadium collaborator, Swiss architect Jacques Herzog. The CTBUH is a leading resource for international high-rise architecture – and particularly sustainable solutions for urban planning. The body has had an interest in China for some time now. The Chicago based not-for-profit, research-oriented organization already has an office in Shanghai (as well as a branch in Venice). Earlier this year, the CTBUH also inaugurated its “China Best Tall Building Awards,” with a first prize for Gerkan, Marg & Partner’s Bund SOHO at Shanghai’s famed Bund riverside promenade. There was also a 2016 China Outstanding Achievement Award for Engineer and designer Dasui Wang, of ECADI, for his work on prestigious projects such as the Shanghai Tower, the CCTV Headquarters in Beijing, and the Expo Axis of the Shanghai Expo 2010. Numerous architects, designers, and engineers also received Excellence Awards and Honorary Mentions. This month the CTBUH has published a compendium to accompany and document the lauded projects 2016. “China Best Tall Buildings: An Overview of 2016 China Skyscrapers” presents all nominees and winners with a selection of photographs, sketches and further materials. The work is a handy guide to and overview of the country’s contemporary skyscraper architecture.Blouin ARTINFO picks 10 prized high-rise buildings in China that feature prominently in the first edition.
