Danish auction house Bruun Rasmussen set a new world record for an enamel by French-Swiss architect Le Corbusier at its international auction of modern art on December 6 in Bredgade, achieving a hammer price of DKK 1.35 million (approx $ 193.367) for “20 heures, arrivée à Chandigarh.”The new-to-the-market work originated from the private collection of Danish architect Jørn Utzon (1918-2008), and was dedicated to him by Le Corbusier during their collaboration on the interior of the Sydney Opera House in the late 1950s and early 1960s. A reference to a sketch by Le Corbusier on the enamel’s reverse describes how this type of artwork could be hung in the Opera House.Utzon, who attained worldwide recognition with his designs for the Sydney Opera House in the late 1950s, and received the Pritzker Prize for his lifetime achievement in 2003, had planned to decorate the Opera House’s interiors with enamels and tapestries by Le Corbusier, before financial restrictions by the new Australian government forced him to withdraw from the project in 1966, leaving his plans for the iconic building’s inside unrealized.Already in June 2015, Bruun Rasmussen had achieved a world record with another Le Corbusier work from the same series, a tapestry entitled ”Les dés sont jetés,” which was purchased by the Sydney Opera House. “20 heures, arrivée à Chandigarh” also doubled the previous world record for an enamel by Le Corbusier set in Zurich last July.
