Royal Academy of Arts (RA) in London named Boonserm Premthada, the founder of the Bangkok Project Studio, as the winner the 2019 Royal Academy Dorfman Architecture Award. The prize also marks the beginning of the RA’s Architecture Week — the institution’s summer celebration of inspirational building design.Premthada receives GBP 10,000 (USD 13,000) as prize money. Premthada was selected from a shortlist comprising Mexico City-based Fernanda Canales; Alice Casey and Cian Deegan from Irish firm TAKA Architects; and Mariam Kamara of Atelier Masomi from Niger. The announcement was made following public presentations by each of the finalists at the RA.“I am very happy to have been chosen as the winner of the Royal Academy Dorfman Award,” Wallpaper quotes Premthada. “It gives me the opportunity to share my love of architecture and what I believe in with the world.”Boonserm Premthada founded Bangkok Project Studio in 2003. The practice celebrates the importance of craft in architecture, leading to carefully detailed projects with a deep sense of authenticity. Local construction methods and materials are crucial to Premthada’s work and his buildings, such as the Kantana Film and Animation Institute in Nakhon Pathom, often utilize the skills of local craftspeople and traditional production methods.“All of the four Royal Academy Dorfman Award finalists have shared immensely impressive projects that demonstrate how inspiring architecture can make a difference to people’s every-day experience,” says Kate Goodwin, Head of Architecture and Drue Heinz Curator, Royal Academy of Arts. “They have highlighted why the Royal Academy Architecture Awards, now in their second year, are one of the most important aspects of the Royal Academy’s architectural activities. We believe in fostering architectural talent, enhancing discourse across the world and building greater awareness and knowledge of the role architects are playing in shaping our environments.”This year’s jury consisted of Alan Stanton, co-founder of Stanton Williams; Louisa Hutton, co-founder of Berlin-based architecture firm, Sauerbruch Hutton; artist and academic Phyllida Barlow; Richard Burdett, professor at the London School of Economics and Political Science; journalist and BBC television presenter, Kirsty Wark; and architect, academic and novelist, Lesley Lokko.The Royal Academy Dorfman Architecture Award champions new talent in architecture.
