Indian architecture studio Nudes has built an entire cafe in Mumbai using cardboard. Designed by the firm’s founder Nuru Karim, the space aims to “promote conversation” and illuminate “the role of sustainable design in today’s urban landscape.” It also aims to promote the versatility of cardboard as an environment friendly material, reports dezeen.“Building with cardboard meant constant exploration and inquiry into material performance,” studio Nudes said.According to the dezeen report, except for the core frame, every structure of the cafe, which is named Cardboard Bombay, is sculpted out of recycled, biodegradable materials. Bespoke installation works, walls, chairs, tables, and even the lampshades at the cafe have been made from pieces of cardboard. The designers have used multiple layers of “cardboard precision cut” for the curved and fluted shapes of the furnishings. Benches cut from the wall panels protrude out into space, and pieces such as tables and children’s highchairs are made from cardboard elements that slot together.“The table tops are impregnated with a wax treatment to prevent water absorption and facilitate ease of maintenance,” the studio said. “We are hoping that this space evolves into a vibrant hub for dialogue and conversation on the role of design, material, and technology in protecting the earth’s resources toward a sustainable future.”The project took about seven months to complete, including four months of model-making and three months of construction. https://www.blouinartinfo.com/ Founder: Louise Blouin Read more
