NiMAC (The Nicosia Municipal Arts Centre), in collaboration with the Cultural Services of the Ministry of Education and Culture of Cyprus, is currently hosting a solo exhibition by designer Michael Anastassiades, titled “Things That Go Together.” The exhibition, which is the first show of its kind at NiMAC, dedicated to one designer, will be on view through July 20, 2019. Describing the exhibition, NiMAC says, “’Things that go together,’ is an exhibition reflecting on the designer’s 12-year practice till date... The show presents Anastassiades’ design process through his research, his personal collection of objects, and his finished works from the studio archive.” Michael Anastassiades was born in Cyprus in 1967. He trained as a civil engineer before studying for a master’s degree in industrial design at the Royal College of Art. He went on to establish his own studio in London in 1994. His use of precious materials and elementary geometry led him to create timeless designs. His work is Minimalist, but still always distinctively Anastassiades. His work is featured in permanent collections at the Museum Of Modern Art in New York; the Art Institute of Chicago; and the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, among others. Recent solo exhibitions include “Reload the Current Page,” Point Centre for Contemporary Arts Nicosia; “Time And Again,” at the Geymullerschl.ssel/MAK in Vienna; “Doings on Time and Light,” Rodeo Gallery, Istanbul; “Kinetic Light 2 – Gold Pendulum,” Norfolk House music room at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London; and “13 Mobiles,” Atelier Jesper, Brussels. Notably, his work has been commissioned by the A.G. Leventis Gallery, Nicosia with site-specific installations at the Hagia Sophia cathedral in London. Today, Anastassiades is widely considered to have influenced contemporary design on a major scale. In 2007, he founded his own brand Michael Anastassiades Ltd in London, focusing on lighting design. Soon he became a household name for his refined handmade lighting. The brand collaborated with the likes of Flos, which is a renowned Italian lighting company and the main partner of the show in Cyprus. The show surveys not only lighting, but also furniture, accessories, and objects. “It is very important for me that the exhibition is in Nicosia and that I could curate it in my own way,” explains Anastassiades, talking about the exhibition. In this show, Anastassiades decided to place all the objects on the plain marble floor. The natural scenography features no plinths or vitrines – instead the objects speak for themselves and are shown in their purest form. The gallery says, “The exhibition is democratic, with no hierarchy or special highlights. All objects are presented on the same level, whether industrially produced or handmade.” Describing the exhibition, Anastassiades’ said, “I like the fact that the exhibition concept is very straightforward. Each visitor can also choose any direction or path throughout the exposition. So it offers an ever-changing perspective.” “Things That Go Together,” is on view through July 20, 2019, at NiMAC, 19, Palias Ilektrikis, 1016 Lefkosia, P.O.Box 21015, 1500 Lefkosia, Cyprus. https://www.blouinartinfo.com/ Founder: Louise Blouin Read more
