The Stockholm-based design brand Hem opened its first US showroom in Downtown Los Angeles with a site-specific installation “Confetti Courtyard,” by the San Francisco-based designer Clark Thenhaus, founder and director of Endemic Architecture.Hem collaborates with vanguard designers and renowned European manufacturers to create a “new generation” of furniture, accessories, and lighting. The vibrant installation celebrates the immersive and collaborative nature of Hem’s new West Coast headquarters through the layering of colorful graphic shapes, according to Hem’s press release.By painting directly on the surfaces of the space’s floor and walls, Thenhaus “re-imagines the space as a lively and kinetic layering of architecture, furniture, landscape, and social activity.”“Distributed throughout the courtyard as though they are oversized pieces of confetti, they create a loose organization with discrete spaces that cues visitors to move and interact in particular, nuanced ways. The super-sized confetti graphics wrap up the walls and fold down onto the floors, implying rooms within the courtyard that sponsor social interactions, encourage active mingling, accommodate varied methods of display for future programming, and frame the courtyard as an immersive, colorful environment. ‘Confetti Courtyard’ sets a uniquely animated backdrop for ongoing programming, activation, and display,” states the press release.Endemic Architecture, founded and directed by Clark Thenhaus, is an award- winning multi-disciplinary practice based in San Francisco, California. Recently, Endemic Architecture received a Best of Design 2017 award from the Architects Newspaper and was a recipient of the 2015 Architectural League Prize for Young Architects and Designers from the Architectural League of New York. Thenhaus has published and exhibited widely and is an Assistant Professor of Architecture at the California College of the Arts.Hem’s first US showroom is a collaboration with Madera.
