R & Company will be presenting “Breaking the Box,” by the Chilean born, New York-based designer Sebastian ErraZuriz from January 24 to March 8, 2019, at the 64 White Street location on the upper level and atrium space. The exhibition will present a curated selection of the newest functional sculpture by ErraZuriz that “exemplifies his multifaceted work and evolution as a Contemporary artist and designer,” the gallery says. The exhibited works challenge the boundaries between art, design, and technology and invite the viewer to question their purpose and function.Describing the artist’s work, the gallery says, “His experimental approach to this new series is seen through the varying materials and stylistic methods he employs. Unified together thematically through their ongoing exploration of nature, humor, life, and death, ErraZuriz encourages viewers to engage and discover the new works in the exhibition.”Talking about his art, the artist explains: “We tend to understand reality by constraining meaning into closed and simplified boxes defined by previous cultural conventions. We live within these pre-established cognitive borders, where we only tend to see, recognize, and accept as true that which has been previously ordered and defined. In ‘Breaking the Box,’ I use art, design, and craft to break open our relationship to objects, function, beauty and time in order to reconsider conventions.”The highlight of the exhibition is the monumental “Bird Chandelier” that cascades down three stories in the dramatic 40-foot atrium gallery space. “The whimsical chandelier consists of a 100 vibrant taxidermy birds that are harmoniously perched and flying in and out of the crystal structure. Drawing visual parallels to a nest, the piece resembles a moment frozen in time. The birds are motionless yet appear energetic bringing to question both life and death,” the gallery says.As per the release, the exhibition will also debut newly developed pieces from the designer’s “Metamorphosis” series, for which he draws inspiration from the Chilean landscape. Newly developed designs from ErraZuriz’s “Mechanical Cabinet” series will also be on display.“Breaking the Box” will be on view from January 24 to March 8, 2019, at R & Company’s 64 White Street, NY 10013For more information, visit: http://www.r-and-company.com/Click on the slideshow for a sneak peek at the exhibition. https://www.blouinartinfo.com/ Founder: Louise Blouin Read more
