Rare Rolls-Royces from the last century made an impactful sale at the RM Sotheby’s Arizona Auction that took place on January 17-18, 2019. The first in the list is 1923 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost Salamanca that was offered from the Calumet Collection, a Southern California auto museum, including a handful of noteworthy Rolls-Royce models that stand out as some of the marque’s best from the previous century. This unique car, “finished in dark red and garnet, with part of the aluminum coachwork left unpainted and polished to a beautiful mirror-like contrast, accentuated by a folding black leather top and hinged window frames, a signature of the Salamanca design,” as the RM Sotheby’s report says, was sold for $235,200. The 1952 Rolls-Royce Silver Wraith Saloon that was also offered from the Calumet Collection was sold for $103,600. It is “one of 27 examples of this handsome design built by James Young on the Silver Wraith chassis, of which 13 were fitted with a division window, Silver Wraith chassis no. WOF23 was exhibited on Young’s stand at the 1951 Earls Court Motor Show, as noted in Bernard L. King’s Rolls-Royce Silver Dawn and Silver Wraith. It was subsequently delivered in July of that year to Sir Robert McAlpine Ltd., the well-known British contracting firm whose leaders were longstanding Rolls-Royce clients in good standing, as noted in period registration documents,” RM Sotheby’s stated. Another Rolls-Royce, the 1967 Rolls-Royce Phantom V State Landaulet by Mulliner Park Ward, from the Calumet Collection, was sold for a high price of $445,000. “With the exception of minor paint and bodywork, necessitated by a slight bump received in Pittsburgh traffic, the State Landaulet remains unrestored and in immaculate condition, with a rich patina and a remarkable 161,795 actual miles recorded at the time of cataloguing. All of its original accessories function beautifully, including the radio and the adjustable rear seat. Accompanying the car is a comprehensive file covering the entire ownership and the maintenance work performed,” according to RM Sotheby’s. Next in line was the 1972 Rolls-Royce Phantom VI Limousine by Mulliner Park Ward that was sold for $291,000. “This Phantom VI, chassis number PRH4703, was commissioned by the well-known Rolls-Royce dealers Lex Mead of Maidenhead as a company ‘demonstrator,’ that would show every available luxury accoutrement that could be specified for one’s new limousine,” the auction house said. The 1989 Rolls-Royce Silver Spirit I Emperor State Landaulet by Hooper & Co., the British coachbuilding firm that built specialty vehicles for Great Britain’s royal family, was yet another important sale for Rolls-Royce in the auction and the car was sold for $190,400. https://www.blouinartinfo.com/ Founder: Louise Blouin Read more
