International architecture firm Snohetta recently won the Budapest South Gate International Masterplan Design Competition. The competition invited innovative designs for a new neighborhood in the Hungarian capital that would accommodate 12,000 students, and provide them with educational, recreational and sports facilities. As reported by dezeen, Snohetta’s winning masterplan envisions an “island’’ neighborhood off the Danube river in south Budapest. As described by dezeen and Snohetta’s official website, the design for the 135-hectare site involves creating a new channel of water off the Danube branch to form a new peninsula, rendering a unique identity to the new neighborhood. The focus of the design is strongly on urban relations. The design makes space for residential facilities of 12,000 students along with “education and sporting facilities, set between parks and recreation areas,’’ as reported by dezeen.Describing its winning masterplan, Snohetta stated: “The site provides the unique opportunity to create a lively waterfront for the people of Budapest. Water as main design element is highlighted with channels reaching far into the new district. Besides to the new public urban spaces along the riverfront, the park landscape offers recreational areas and sports facilities. Furthermore, the fluvial landscape enhances the biodiversity of the city quarter and provides for water treatment. All parts of the urban fabric are given strong identities, relating to each other and resulting in a resilient, colorful, and vibrant new district of Budapest — the South Gate Peninsula.’’Snohetta proposal was selected from 17 other invited applicants including UNStudio, Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios, Adept, and Squire and Partners.Praising Snohetta’s design for making clever use of water and abundant green spaces, the competition jury stated, “it boldly accepts the challenge of developing a new neighborhood in Budapest that does not yet exist. It captures the opportunities of the area — offered by water, green belts and the characteristics of an island.”The peninsula in the south of Budapest is being developed as part of the Budapest 2030 plan, which envisages the Hungarian capital as a more sustainable, energy-efficient and socially minded urban space. https://www.blouinartinfo.com/ Founder: Louise Blouin Read more
