The British architect and designer John Pawson has been recognized for his services to design and architecture by the Queen with a CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) in the 2019 New Year’s Honors. The Queen’s biannual honors program “recognizes the outstanding achievements of people across the United Kingdom.”Pawson founded his architecture studio in 1981. He is known for his minimalist aesthetics, which shows in his understated residential works and product design. One of his most significant works is the renovation of the Commonwealth Institute in Kensington, which is now the Design Museum dedicated to architecture and design. Pawson designed the museum’s oak-lined interior spaces.Other notable works include the Life House Retreat, which is part of philosopher Alain de Botton’s Living Architecture series; a minimal church in Augsburg in Germany; and a clifftop holiday home on Japan’s Okinawa Island. He has also designed a range of minimal furniture for Spanish brand Viccarbe and an oil lamp for Swedish lighting company Wastberg, according to Dezeen.The Queen’s New Year’s Honors are awarded each year in June. David Adjaye received a Knighthood in the 2017 New Year’s Honors.
