Pritzker Architecture PrizeIndian architect Balkrishna Doshi was awarded the 2018 Pritzker Prize, the highest honor in the field of architecture.Born in India’s Pune city in 1927, Doshi, as he is fondly called, worked with Le Corbusier and Louis Kahn during the initial years of his architecture practice. Over the years, the architect has combined his learning from the two modern masters with acute local sensibility. In his career spanning 70 years, he has completed more than 100 projects including a number of low-cost housing developments. In 1954, Doshi had stated: “It seems I should take an oath and remember it for my lifetime: to provide the lowest class with the proper dwelling.” Later, he went on to create Aranya Low-Cost Housing Development in Indore, home to over 80,000 people, which got him the 1993-1995 Aga Khan Award for Architecture. Some of his notable projects include the Ahmedabad School of Architecture (1966); his own studio “Sangath” featuring concrete barrel vaults, sunken communal spaces and water features; and his experimental, cave-like gallery Amdavad ni Gufa (1995).Read complete interview with Balkrishna Doshi here. The Gold Medal is the AIA’s highest annual honor, which recognizes individuals whose work has had a lasting influence on the theory and practice of architecture.“From the Centre Pompidou in Paris to New York City’s post-September 11 skyline, the work of Richard Rogers, Hon. FAIA, has influenced architectural conversations and helped redefine an architect’s responsibilities to society. Rogers’ commitment to our cities, environment, and humanity has resulted in a wealth of honors, while cementing his place in architectural history,” states AIA.Rogers was born in Florence and trained as an architect in London and, later, at Yale University. One of his earliest projects was the Centre Pompidou, which he designed with Renzo Piano.Rogers has won several major architectural honors over a span of five decades, including the 1985 RIBA Royal Gold Medal, the 2007 Pritzker Architecture Prize, and the RIBA Stirling Prize in 2006 and 2009. He was named a Praemium Architecture Laureate by the Japan Art Association in 2000 and was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1991. He has sat as a Labor peer in England’s House of Lords since 1996, according to AIA. RIBA International PrizeThis year’s RIBA International Prize went to Aleph Zero and Rosenbaum for Children Village, a new school complex on the edge of the rainforest in northern Brazil. Funded by the Bradesco Foundation, it is one of 40 schools run by the foundation, which aims to provide education for children in rural communities across Brazil. Children Village provides boarding facility for 540 children aged 13 to 18 years who attend the Canuanã School. Students come from remote areas of the country. Some even travel many hours by boat.“It has been a joy to see the children making the building their own and adapting the space to fit their needs,” said Gustavo Utrabo and Pedro Duschenes from Aleph Zero. “We wanted to be prescriptive without being overbearing, to be supportive without being patronizing, and to encourage growth and development without cosseting it.”“Children Village provides an exceptional environment designed to improve the lives and wellbeing of the school’s children,” said RIBA President Ben Derbyshire. “It illustrates the immeasurable value of good educational design.” Royal Gold MedalRoyal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) has declared Sir Nicholas Grimshaw, the renowned British architect known for his Modernist public buildings, as the 2019 recipient of the Royal Gold Medal. He is an educator, champion for the UK architectural profession and for culture more widely. He is an inspiration to a future generation of architects and his recognition with this Royal Gold Medal is well overdue.” RIBA Stirling PrizeFoster + Partners won the RIBA Stirling Prize 2018 for the new European headquarters for Bloomberg in London.
