MAD Architects’ “Nanjing Zendai Himalayas Center” in Nanjing, China has entered its final phase of construction. Led by Ma Yansong, Founder and Principal Partner of MAD Architects, the 560,000 square-meters mixed-use development “seeks to restore the spiritual harmony between humanity and nature through the integration of contemplative spaces that, while immersing inhabitants in nature, still meets the conveniences of modern day living.”Nanjing was built over 2,600 years ago. The iconic city’s rich traditional heritage and high modernization are the two motifs that MAD uses to achieve a balance between the city’s historic past and its high-tech future in the Nanjing Zendai Himalayas Center.Featuring commercial, hotel, office, and residential programs, the city-scale urban project is designed like a village-like community. “A mix of low-rise buildings, connected by footbridges, is nestled into the landscape. Curving, ascending corridors and elevated pathways weave through the commercial buildings. Activated by public gardens and social spaces, they create a spiritual and poetic retreat in the middle of the city,” writes MAD Architects.Mountain-like towers, which appear to have been carved out by wind and water, stand along the edge of the site. “Defined by white, curved glass louvres that ‘flow’ like waterfalls, they reflect Nanjing’s surrounding mountain ranges and meandering rivers. Water features, such as ponds, waterfalls, brooks, and pools connect the buildings, while trees and rich plantings see the artificial and manmade coalesce with one another — forming a rich, architectural landscape,” writes MAD architects. The “Nanjing Zendai Himalayas Center” is expected to be completed in 2020.Click on the slideshow for a sneak peek at the project. https://www.blouinartinfo.com/ Founder: Louise Blouin Read more
