Outgoing Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker is laying the groundwork to sign the power grab bills denying his Democratic successor, Tony Evers, the same powers he has enjoyed so much. If he sounds a little defensive—as he should—that doesn’t mean that his argument doesn’t boil down to “I feel righteous about this nakedly partisan act”: In his Facebook post, the outgoing governor wrote the majority of his successor’s powers will remain intact — notably the governor’s veto authority — and suggested the bills would improve transparency, increase accountability, affirm stability and protect taxpayers. In translation, Walker is squirming a little, which has some amusement value, but he’s planning on signing these and claiming that “stability” is more important than affirming the will of the voters. At least if that stability boils down to the continuing Republican ability to screw over workers, the environment, and the basic notions of justice and equality. Read more
