In the public imagination, all of Miami leads a life of glamour and luxury. Between the beaches and late-night dance clubs, all hours of the day can be spent indulging one’s whims. In early December, hundreds of gallerists, artists, collectors, descend upon the sands of Miami Beach for Art Basel. To narrow the choices for those interested in join - ing Miami’s glittering nightlife options, I spoke to a few artists and curators from Miami who clued me in to a few tried and true bars and lesser-known clubs favored by locals. What follows are four night-time spots that range from an unhinged dance club to a homey, New Orleans-style wine bar.GRAMPS Home to music, dark corners, dancing, and, on occasion, alliga - tor wrestling, Gramps is a neigh - borhood favorite in the artsy dis - trict of Wynwood. Its robust event calendar promises something every night, from DJs spinning hits to stand-up comedy and film-screen - ings. Outside is a large patio with a well-curated collection of quirky, mismatching furniture. Known for its inventive cocktails and craft brew specials, Gramps is a stalwart bar in a trendy neighborhood.SHOTS Also in the Wynwood area is Shots, a lively nightclub featuring DJs and, yes, lots of shots. Up to 100 different ones, to be exact, which allows for just about any cocktail mix you could imagine. To flag a bartender, be prepared to come up with some attention-get - ting antics like singing or, for the less audacious, using one of their many props on hand like animal masks. Food trucks outside will serve as a godsend as the night winds down. Discrepancy and humiliation are best left at the door.LAGNIAPPE For something quieter, try Lagniappe, a homey New Orleans-style wine bar in Midtown, near Wynwood. This casual bar and restaurant has a unique serve-yourself format where customers can peruse, at their leisure, over 150 bottles of wine, refrigerators of beer, and cheese and meats for a charcuterie board — all at very reasonable prices. Once you have made your selection, step out into the open yard and enjoy a charcuterie board with friends to music that matches the chill environment: jazz, blues, and folk are featured nightly. If you brought an appe - tite, there are also grilled meats and vegetables available in entreesized portions.WOOD TAVERN Frequented by artists, writers, and musicians, Wood Tavern seems a custom fit for those attending Art Basel. The hip, industrial interior is paired with an outdoor patio whose floors resemble a board - walk with stadium-style seating on either side. With a dozen craft beers on draft, countless more in bottles and cans, and a reliable cocktail list, it would be easy to begin and end your night at Wood Tavern.— This article appears in the December 2018 edition of Blouin Artinfo Fair newspaper.https://www.blouinartinfo.com/ Founder: Louise Blouin Read more
