Architects Herzog & de Meuron recently unveiled the revised design for the Museum of the 20th Century in Berlin. The design proposal aims to open the museum space even further to its surroundings and follow the idea of networking even more intensively. The three areas of focus include the house shape, the intersecting boulevards, and the translucent facade made of brick. Herzog & de Meuron proposes new entrances and visual references to connect the museum building even more strongly to the surrounding urban space.“The many responses to the competition design in the media, professional circles, and the public have demonstrated the importance of this project and have spurred us on to further develop the project,” emphasizes Jacques Herzog. “Our urban concept for the Kulturforum is a concept of density, not emptiness. It organizes an interaction of precisely related buildings. And it also initiates the interplay of cultural institutions established in it. "The architects have developed the design in collaboration with the Nationalgalerie. In the revised floor plans for the four storeys, three of these four floors will be opened to the public. The four floors will house exhibition rooms, rooms for art education and work, areas for the visitor service, a multifunctional media room, as well as the gastronomy. Depot, restoration, office and technical rooms will be housed in the internal areas of the museum. The President of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation, Hermann Parzinger, said: “The architects have considerably developed the original design. Not only the new quality of the exterior design, but also the development of the interior make the building a true hub between the Philharmonic, State Institute of Music Research, St. Matthew Church and New National Gallery on the one hand, and State Library, Ibero-American Institute and Gemaldegalerie. That was always important to us. For the SPK and its State Museums, a magnificent building will be built here, containing the unique collection of the National Gallery from the East and West to the art of the 20th century. Together with the collections of Erich Marx, Ulla and Heiner Pietzsch, and will also include holdings of the Kunstbibliothek and the Kupferstichkabinett. Today, we have come a great deal closer to our goal of creating a new, outstanding place for the art of the 20th century.”The design is expected to be completed in the summer of 2019, and the groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for the end of 2019. The design plans for the museum will be on display in a small exhibition in the foyer of the Kulturforum from November 2018.Click on the slideshow for a sneak peek at the revised design.http://www.blouinartinfo.com/ Founder: Louise Blouin Read more
