The winners of the 2018 London Design Medals have been announced. The coveted Panerai London Design Medal will be awarded to Cyprus born British/Turkish Cypriot fashion designer, Hussein Chalayan. The Design Innovation Medal has been won by designer, inventor, and professor at the MIT Media Lab, Neri Oxman. Grace Wales Bonner will receive the Emerging Design Medal and the Lifetime Achievement Medal will be presented to Czech-born architect Eva Jiřična. The winners will receive their medals at The British Land Celebration of Design on September 17 at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, Southbank Centre. The works of the four winners will be exhibited at the V&A during the London Design Festival from September 15-23.Hussein Chalayan is known for his innovative approach to design, beautiful tailoring, and an elegant minimalist aesthetic. Chalayan is considered one of the industry’s intellectuals for his designs that are some of fashion’s most experimental — with frock coats that build themselves (autumn/winter 2007-08); coffee tables that morph into skirts (autumn/winter 2000-01); dresses with wings to mimic those of aeroplanes (spring/summer 2000); and pieces that can be folded up into an envelope (spring/summer 2000-01). His work has been worn by the industry’s boldest dressers — from Bjork to Lady Gaga.Neri Oxman has been hailed as ‘Nature’s Architect.’ Her best known works include the “Silk Pavilion” (2013) a robotically spun, biologically augmented structure woven by 6,500 free-ranging silkworms on a robotically fabricated silk scaffold, as well as “Vespers” (2016–18), a series of 3D-printed death masks augmented with pigment-producing microorganisms. Oxman’s work is in the permanent collections of MoMA, SFMOMA, Pompidou, MFA, Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum, the FRAC, and the Museum of Science, among others.Grace Wales Bonner explores a distinctive notion of luxury via a hybrid of European and African approaches. She was awarded Emerging Menswear Designer at the British Fashion Awards just a year after her graduation from Central Saint Martins in 2014, and she also won the LVMH Young Designer Prize. Wales Bonner has also presented at the Serpentine Gallery and the V&A, while also lecturing at Parsons in New York.London-based Eva Jiřična is best known for creatively fusing her engineering and architecture background with interior design. A Royal Academician, CBE, and royal designer for industry, she was responsible for the interior design of the Lloyd’s of London building.Click on the slideshow for a sneak peek at the awardees.http://www.blouinartinfo.com/ Founder: Louise Blouin Read more
