Design Museum in Helsinki is currently hosting a group show, “Utopia Now — The Story of Finnish Design” that explores the value addition that design can make to any product, turning it into a work of art. The exhibition is on view through December 31, 2020. The curator of the exhibition is Katarina Siltavuori. The exhibition showcases the history of Finnish design through live stories with the use of contemporary technology and digital platform. “It tells the important role of design in the evolution of the Finnish welfare state,” says the museum release. The history of Finnish design is described through various themes and takes place in various dedicated rooms in the museum: the Process Room, the Timeline Room, the Timeline Corridor, the Icon Room, the Changing Room and the Warehouse. The Process Room highlights the everyday side of design answering questions like “what happens before an object or a service becomes a product,” says the release. The room displays seven different examples of the design process — each one was a utopia in its own day, from Nokia mobile phones to Rovio games. The Virtual Room contains a three-dimensional display of the Finnish pavilion at the Paris World’s Fair of 1900. The Virtual Room offers a 180-degree video project of Marimekko’s printed fabrics. The exhibits in the Timeline Corridor employ wall projections giving an overview of the Finnish design in relation to society. A large body of visual material from the museum’s collections is presented here. The Icon Room focuses on women and displays utopias that led to classic products. The designers featured in this room are Gunnel Nyman, Vuokko Nurmesniemi, Aino and Alvar Aalto, Tapio Wirkkala and Rut Bryk. The Changing Room is a venue for three different exhibitions. The Warehouse contains a large number of items of different periods from the museum’s collections. The exhibition is part of the program to celebrate the centenary of Finnish independence. The exhibition is on view through December 31, 2020, at Design Museum in Helsinki, Finland.
