The Museum fur Kunst und Gewerbe Hamburg (MKG) will showcase “68. Pop and Protest” from October 18, 2018, through March 17, 2019.“68. Pop and Protest” features key images, films, texts, and sounds of the late 1960s that shed light on the complexity of the era. On view will be a selection of around 200 objects that have been drawn from the museum’s collections. These include works of fine and applied art as well as historical documents, posters, photographs, fashion, and design objects. Alongside, important loans that depict how people were in 1968 in Hamburg, Germany, and the across the world with a growing awareness of basic human rights and advocating for them through protest and rebellion. In 1968, the world witnessed a series of events that led to nationwide protests and gave rise to revolutionary ideas. “... a worldwide cultural revolution was set in motion that found imaginative ways to rise up against conservative authoritarian structures, promoting sexual freedom and calling for the equality of one and all,” a press note by the MKG states. Non-violent means of expression and protests emerged and among them was avant-garde forms of expression in all artistic disciplines along with progressive music, unconventional fashion and uninhibited design, controversial theatre, and socially critical auteur cinema. These were coupled with a need for critical discourse and public debate. According to the museum, “the common denominator was hope: hope of making the world a better place, society more just, and people more humane; hope that political repression would end, boundaries would be overcome, walls would fall, and sexuality would no longer be vulnerable to exploitation.”The focus of the exhibition will be the Spiegel Canteen created in 1968. “The dining room and snack bar in iridescent shades of red have been installed on the second floor of MKG as a modern period room,” the museum writes. “For over forty years, world events were discussed here: the Vietnam War, the Stammheim Trial, German reunification, the economic crisis ... The canteen’s colorful and optimistic mood contrasts starkly with the gravity of these issues.” It was created by the Danish architect Verner Panton (1926–1998). “With its harmonious geometric forms and flowing, atmospheric transitions is a prime example of the casual caves for living propagated by Pop Art design – an affront to the canons of ‘Good Form’ embodied by the functional Bauhaus style,” the museum adds. The museum presents this design ensemble within the context of the visions and ideals that came to the fore during that particular period. The exhibition runs from October 18, 2018, through March 17, 2019, at the Museum fur Kunst und Gewerbe Hamburg, 20097 Hamburg, Germany. For details, visit: https://www.mkg-hamburg.de/en/Click on the slideshow for a sneak peek at the exhibition.http://www.blouinartinfo.comFounder: Louise Blouin Read more
