Come August and the Chicago Architecture Foundation (CAF) will have a new home — the Chicago Architecture Center (CAC), which is scheduled to open on August 31, 2018. Located at 111 East Wacker Drive, the 20,000 square-foot structure has been designed by Chicago-based firm Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture (AS+GG). With custom spaces designed for education, tour orientation, and other public programs, along with a store and interactive exhibits, the CAC will be “home to everything architecture in Chicago,” according to ArchDaily.Talking about the new center, Lynn Osmond, the CAF’s president and CEO, said, “We can’t wait for people to visit and experience how Chicago architects have influenced the world through their innovation and vision. We’ve engineered a stimulating and immersive space where visitors can have fun discovering Chicago’s groundbreaking architecture and appreciate its profound impact on the world.”The CAC is opening in a building with architectural significance. 111 East Wacker was designed by the Office of Mies van der Rohe, a pioneer of Modernist architecture. “There was a long search for the perfect location and I remember when I walked into this space, it just took my breath away,” said Gordon Gill, co-founder of AS+GG Architecture. One of the highlights of the center would be the “Building Tall” exhibition, featuring “supersized scale models” of famous skyscrapers from Chicago and around the world including a nearly 40-foot-tall model of Saudi Arabia’s Jeddah Tower. The models will be housed in the Skyscraper Gallery with “40-foot tall windows overlooking the Chicago River and the Michigan Avenue Bridge,” noted ArchDaily. A week-long celebration will preceed the official public opening of the center at the end of August. http://www.blouinartinfo.com/ Founder: Louise Blouin Read more
