The Museum fur Gestaltung Zurich is hosting an exhibition of works by Swiss design agency atelier oi to mark the opening of a refurbished main building on Ausstellungsstrasse. The show titled “Oiphorie” is open through September 30, 2018.The installations set up by atelier oi create an environment of light, color, and movement. According to the museum, “the large hall at Ausstellungsstrasse 60 is filled with Minoshi, white blossoms made of soft Japanese washi paper, Brindilles, twigs of cloth ribbons and slender wooden sticks, and Helicoidales, large spirals thinly cut pinewood strips.” Apart from the installations that are on display, also on view are important design works created by Aurel Aebi, Armand Louis and Patrick Reymond and their team since the studio was founded in 1991. These designs are simple and yet at the same time, comprehensible forms. Inspired by everyday elements and narratives they are easy to remember. “In addition to the products, material studies, prototypes, and videos provide comprehensive insights into their systematic and playful way of working,” the museum adds.Material is at the heart of atelier oi’s designs ranging from coffee cups to factory buildings. At the center of it all is high-quality craftsmanship. Light and the use of different lights are a recurrent theme in the work of the designer agency. “The lamps ‘Les danseuses’ rotate at different speeds, but always so fast that the centrifugal force retains the upper hand over gravity. The effect of dancing dervishes, created by the gentle wave-form, hides the simple construction,” the museum says. “Another lamp with the programmatic name Oiphorique contracts and expands. The lampshades form objects whose movements reminds one of the breathing of mammals or jellyfish in the sea.”The name atelier oi is derived from the Russian word “troika” which suggests a trio. It conveys dynamism and holistic energy a tripartite driving force in the service of the projects. Their team consists of 35 members and combines various working methods from product design, to architecture, and scenography.“Oiphorie: atelier oi” runs through September 30, 2018, at Museum fur Gestaltung Zurich, Ausstellungsstrasse 60, 8031 Zurich. For details, visit: http://admin.blouinartinfo.com/galleryguide/755842/755840/home-overviewClick on the slideshow for a sneak peek at the exhibition.http://www.blouinartinfo.comFounder Louise Blouin Read more
