Dansk Mobelkunst Gallery is presenting a set of major pieces from the golden age of Nordic design including works by Alvar Aalto, Grete Jalk, Finn Juhl, Hans J. Wegner, and other renowned designers at Design Basel 2018.“20th century Nordic design possesses a timeless quality and beauty that continue to arouse our admiration and fit into a modern lifestyle. Yet, the pieces came out of a very time-specific cultural movement, characterized by quality and professional pride. That is why they are still so well preserved today,” says Ole Hostbo, founder of Dansk Mobelkunst Gallery.Alvar Aalto is Finland’s leading international figure in the field of 20th century architecture and design. The gallery has chosen Aalto’s “Beehive” which is the most distinctive lighting designs that creates a warm and atmospheric light. Aalto’s work embraced almost all key public institutions — town halls, theatres, churches, libraries, and universities — as well as standardized housing and private homes. It was characteristic of Aalto’s understanding of architecture that furniture and lighting were an integral part of the building and therefore no less important for creating an environment fit for human beings than the architectural frame itself. Aalto was very aware of how much artificial light influences the human psyche and the daily activities, especially in a cold and dark northern climate and he insistently regarded lamps as sources of light defining our use and experience of spaceGrete Jalk is known for her considerable share in the written debate and as editor of the four-volume work of reference “The Copenhagen Cabinetmakers’ Guild Exhibitions 1927-1966.” The gallery is displaying one of her finest pieces, a daybed, designed in 1961. Defined as something in between a bed, a bench, and a sofa, it has become a timeless classic, highly functional and flexible. The very fine woodwork is executed by cabinetmaker P. Jeppesen. The gallery’s expertise encompasses both handcrafted masterpieces and iconic works of industrial design. The very early examples that have become collector’s items and are on view include Finn Juhl’s and Hans J. Wegner’s cabinetmaker’s furniture, Poul Kjaerholm’s furniture made by Kold Christensen, Poul Henningsen’s lamps from the 1920’s and 1930’s, and Peder Moos’ unique works. The gallery specializes in rare, original works of Danish furniture that were created during 1920-70, when a circle of craftsmen, architects, and designers erased the distinction between works of art and functional equipment for everyday life.Dansk Mobelkunst Gallery is exhibiting through June 17, 2018 at Design Miami/ Basel, Booth G44, Hall 1 Sud, Messe Basel, Switzerland.http://www.blouinartinfo.com/ Founder: Louise Blouin Read more
