Artcurial has set a new auction record for Australian designer Marc Newson’s “Pod of Drawers” 1987 during its October 25 Heavy Metal sale in Paris.The riveted aluminium chest of drawers sold to an Asian collector for €1,019,800 / $1,111,582 against an estimate of €600 000 – 800 000.Inspired by the 18th Century style of 1920s French cabinetmaker Andre Groult, Newson’s “Pod of Drawers” is entirely hand-made from aluminium panels over a fiberglass frame.The sellout sale also set new artist auction records for Jacques Le Chevallier, Ingrid Donat, Mathieu Matégot, and Serge Mouille.Arturial Vice-President Fabian Naudan said: “Thanks to the presence of collectors who came from around the world, Artcurial proves yet again that Paris is a key design destination.“The series of world records reached for the design masters, mainly French, and the contemporary designers, highlight the healthy state of the design market.” Read more
