Dublin-based O’Donnell + Tuomey recently unveiled design for three interconnected opera houses in Shanghai, which will be coming up near the Huangpu river. The cultural complex, part of a regeneration masterplan for the 2010 Expo site, is conceived as a “city of opera” featuring an 1800-seat opera hall, a 400-seat performance space, and a 650-seat theater, noted Dezeen.The architects stated: “The theme of our plan is ‘convergence.’ Building on the established tradition of promenade, procession and flow, we see the public spaces of the city of opera like grand station halls, civic spaces of community congregation.”The structure’s walls, roofscapes, and floors will be made from brick, which the architects call the “fundamental material of the project.” O'Donnell + Tuomey further stated: “The building glows at night through perforated brickwork, reflecting in the river like a prismatic lantern.”This new performance space will join the league of other leading performance spaces designed by prominent architects — including Foster + Partners, Heatherwick Studio, and Tadao Ando — in China’s largest city Shanghai.
