Stepping into the Budapest Café in Chengdu, China might feel like entering Wes Anderson’s mythical Grand Budapest Hotel. The Melbourne-based design studio Biasol took their love for the movie seriously and had incorporated Anderson’s meticulous and magical style in each and every nook and corner of the café.The Budapest Café evokes Anderson’s style to the T right from quirky set designs, vivid color palettes, proscenium arches, and the sentiment that pervades his film. An arch frames the entrance to the café projecting a sense of grandeur as patrons walk in. The physical design of the café, with its layers and elevations, invites the customers to engage with the space. A mezzanine level offers a view from above. Symmetrical arches frame recessed seating. Stairs and steps are integrated into fireplaces, shelving, and the long marble bar, creating an elegant and whimsical aesthetic.Despite its grand structure, the café has a playful, feminine appeal with its pink ball pool, Eero Aarnio Bubble chair, and neon signage. The pink terrazzo of bathrooms complements as well as contrast with the green hues of the café interior. “The concept, colors, and details continue through the branding, which is integrated into the design of the café to contribute to the imaginative and evocative space,” stated Jean-Pierre Biasol, Principal at Biasol.
