Wagga Wagga Art Gallery is currently hosting an exhibition of works titled “Dancing with the Flame: Contemporary Australian Lampwork.”The show features works of glass artists from across Australia and sheds light on the contemporary techniques and styles that revolve around the tradition of lampworking. On display are pieces by over 40 glass artists from across the country and looks at the versatility and tremendous scope of the art form, including sculpture, beadwork, and jewelry. “Dancing with the Flame: Contemporary Australian Lampwork” narrates the visual dialogues through its installation which is the balance of design and mark-making possibilities with spotless detail and complexity. Lampworking can also be termed as flameworking and is a traditional technique that has been used by glass artists for countless generations. The technique involves a torch or lamp which is directly used to melt the glass materials. The melted glass is then formed by blowing and shaping with tools and hand movements. The process of lampworking first originated in Italy in the 14th century and then gradually spread across Europe, the Americas, and then the rest of the world. Specific techniques also developed which includes shaping glass rods and tubing; creating beads and marbles; making of paperweights, and pendants among others. The exhibition is a project for the National Art Glass Gallery at Wagga Wagga Art Gallery. The Wagga Wagga Art Gallery highlights the vibrant and diverse culture of the Riverina with a dynamic roster of exhibitions, activities, and events all year round.
