Songzhuang, in Beijing, is home to the biggest and most famous artist community in China. The recently opened Tree Art Museum in the region, designed by Daipu Architects, creates a public space for the artists and art lovers to stay, date, and interact with each other.Visitors can enter the museum either through the ramp or the courtyard with their eyes following the curvy floor slab that rises from the ground and goes all the way up to the roof. A bare concrete wall separates the first courtyard from the main road. The wall has a corridor for exhibiting books or small sculptures. The pool in the courtyard reflects the sky, helping people to “filter their mind.” The tree becomes a sheltered space where people can chat, or feed fishes in the pool. The curtain wall allows one to view artworks from outside and watch other people moving around inside the building. The second courtyard introduces natural light to the back exhibition hall. The curvy wall invites visitors to the public stairs-plaza on the roof, where they can lounge in the sunshine, look down on the pool or interact with people in the courtyard.Daipu Architects have created six and a half courtyards to encourage interaction and communication. All the courtyards open to the sky and introduce sunlight to the exhibition halls and meeting spaces.Through this project, Daipu Architects “hopes to create a place where local people and visitors would communicate with natural light, trees, water, and contemporary art. This simple and plain idea will spread out through their experience.”For more details, visit: http://www.daipuarchitects.com/Click on the slideshow for a sneak peek at the museum. Read more
