Carpenters Workshop Gallery, New York is hosting unique sculptural works of Vincent Dubourg in the exhibition titled “Vortex.”Dubourg was the youngest designer to present his works at Carpenters Workshop Gallery in the 2006 exhibition “Metal,” where his works were featured alongside the works of Prouvé and Ron Arad. Since then, the designer has held several solo shows at the gallery’s London and Paris venues, and international fairs, and now he is making a debut in New York.Dubourg’s sculptural furniture subverts traditional cabinet-making practice through his fresh approach to techniques and materials. He is inspired by simple forms, which are brought to life through a poetic fusion of wood-bending, glass blowing, and metal casting. “The idea behind ‘Vortex’ is to take society, engulf it in a vortex, and take it to a new planet and other ways of living,” says Dubourg. He refuses to be categorized either as a designer or sculptor, and does not want to affix any labels to his works. The designer frees his work from categorization by striking a delicate balance between the conventional and the novel, the found and the natural. The stationary furniture gets a sense of motion in Dubourg’s hands, making references to the force of nature that can never be truly tamed. “Vent Sur La Table” appears to be free of gravity as it whirls bronze and branches upward while remaining frozen within the structure. “Commode à Nouvelle, Zélande” appears to be a flipped bar resting on rows of bottles and glasses. In “Plancher à Nouvelle Zélande,” shelves seem to be making an escape by flying from the wall. Dubourg gives a surreal conceptual twist to traditional craftsmanship by drawing on the forces of air, water, and fire to shape the contors of his works. The exhibition runs through December 23, 2017 at Carpenters Workshop Gallery, 693 5th Avenue, New York 10022.For more details, visit: www.blouinartinfo.com/galleryguide/carpenters-workshop-gallery/overviewClick on the slideshow for a sneak peek at the exhibition.
