British architectural designer John Pawson has been commissioned by British Fashion Council and Swarovski to design the trophy for Fashion Awards 2017. The trophy named “Filament” is minimalistic and made from crystal. The concept combines themes affiliated with both the fashion industry and architecture. A material thread is cast at the center of the Swarovski crystal, each unique to the award winner. The palette of thread colors, equally distinct when seen apart as they are engaging as a collective, represents the diversity of the award winners themselves. A convex lens situated at the top of the piece magnifies and distorts the thread on-end, read in contrast to the fine linear encapsulated band when viewed in elevation. Facets of graduating widths complement the pure cylindrical surface around the trophy’s body. The designer said, “I wanted to design something reduced to its simplest possible form, in this case the cylinder — something you could hold in your hand — which I could then retune to use the inherent qualities of the Swarovski crystal. Its design means that all four sides provide a different view of the thread. The serendipitous aspect of the project is the way the finished piece refracts light,” noted Domus. Read more
