Magen H Gallery, New York, will soon be hosting the first retrospective of works by craftsmen Pierre Chapo.The show features a selection of works by Chapo such as tables, benches, chairs, and desk created by the designer from 1960 to 1970. These were never exhibited before and highlight his artistic practice of focusing on matter, form, and function. Chapo created furniture designs that were rooted in tradition. His designs are known for their simplicity, quality, and cabinet making processes. The exhibition focuses on unique or commissioned pieces from private collections or the estate. It commemorates the 30th anniversary of Chapo’s passing and showcases the oeuvre of an artist who created over 100 models throughout his artistic career.Pierre Chapo (1927 - 1987) was a Parisian craftsman. He studied architecture at l’Ecole Nationale des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He traveled extensively across Europe and America and finally returned to Paris to set up his gallery in 1957 and founded his studio in Clamart. The gallery showcased the works of Chapo as well as other designers and artists such as Serge Mouille, Isamu Noguchi, and Charlotte Perriand. It exhibited works ranging from furniture, decorative art objects to lighting.
