Design Museum, London announces the shortlist for the Beazley Designs of the Year, the museum’s tenth annual celebration of the most notable design ideas from the past 12 months. The 62 nominations span a range of varied disciplines including architecture, graphics, product design, and fashion. An international panel served as the jury to select the nominees with the final shortlisted designs being exhibited at the museum. The projects highlight the current state of the world with several entries dealing with refugees and the political turmoil of the past year. Some notable examples are Wolfgang Tillmans’ pro-EU, anti-Brexit poster campaign and the Olympic refugee flag by Yara Said that represents the first refugee team taking part in an Olympic competition. Socially-driven designs can be seen in the likes of the Calais Builds Project, Francis Kerè’s project for a secondary school in Burkina Faso, as well the Pussyhat. New technologies and innovative use of materials are seen in designs by Max Lamb and Really’s recycled textile benches and Chilean studio gt2P’s lava furniture. The selection bolsters the museum’s position as a global observatory for creative disciplines. The exhibition is on view through January 28, 2018 at the Design Museum, London, and the winners will be announced in January next year, noted Wallpaper.
