Galerie VIVID, Rotterdam is presenting the works of designers Bob Bonies and Shiro Kuramata.Bob Bonies and Shiro Kuramata began their careers in the 1960s and were considered pioneers in their field during that time. Japanese designer Kuramata passed away in 1991 at the age of 56 whereas Bonies is still actively creating his works that are presented in museums and galleries worldwide. In this exhibition, Bonies will present his abstract geometric paintings alongside Kuramata’s iconic furniture.Bonies was part of the “de Stijl” Dutch arts movement that originated in the 1920s that believed in minimalistic art. Interestingly, Bonies has always used only four colors in his lifetime and studied them in all its forms. He used the primary colors red, yellow, and blue along with green (mix of blue and yellow) and white, which is not a color.Kuramata spent most of his life in experimenting with form and function while designing furniture. He gained prominence around 1977 for his work titled “Drawer in an Irregular Form” which pretty much like its title was S-shaped storage piece. “Miss Blanche” was another unusual work. In this transparent chair, red paper rosebuds were molded in acrylic resin. He was among those post-war artists who changed the way people thought of Japan and became known for his poetic and sensuous styles incorporated in furniture designs. This exhibition runs through November 5, 2017, at Galerie VIVID, Red Apple building, Scheepmakershaven 17, 3011VA Rotterdam – Netherlands.
