“Green Block,” an innovative greening project by WATG, envisions creative ways to enhance the natural biodiversity of London and other major cities across the globe. “Green Block” is the firm’s response to a challenge posed by London Mayor Sadiq Khan to designate London as the first National Park City. WATG, , led by Demet Karaoglu, has worked in collaboration with Daniel Raven-Ellison, Guerrilla Geographer & Creative Explorer, who is leading the campaign to make London the world’s first NPC.The “Green Block” is envisaged as a maintenance-free 100 percent recyclable modular building, permeated with native wildflower seeds and containing its own irrigation reservoir. With planting that is specific to the UK climate but also adaptable for global use, it can be used in creative ways to enhance the natural biodiversity of London. Some of them include reclaiming expanses of tarmac and space made available by redundant roads and car parks, adding greenery to existing cafes while filtering the city air, thereby creating a more appealing cityscape, connecting the city’s existing parks, and allowing residents and property owners to create their own urban allotments.John Goldwyn, Vice President of Planning and Landscape for WATG said, “Our inspiration was to think about London in the future when there are fewer cars on the road and fewer car lanes.” Mayor Khan has given his full support for London to become a National Park City and plans are in motion for the NPC to be declared in 2018 and launched in 2019, noted World Architecture News.
