The Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo, New York is a 155-year-old institution that is set to go through a refurbishing in the recent future. The gallery boasts of a collection featuring works by the likes of Francis Bacon, Pablo Picasso, Henry Matisse, Freida Kahlo and Andy Warhol. The building of the heritage institution that is widely popular today was designed by the legendary architect Gordon Bunshaft who gave it a clean-lined makeover remaining true to the modernist tendencies that were developing in the era. The onus of the latest revamp lies on the Office for Metropolitan Architecture which is a Dutch organisation, but the locals have expressed their concerns regarding the same. The Globe and Mail notes that the gallery has been subject to similar controversies in the past and each time it has proved the sceptics wrong. The selection of Bunshaft as the architect was in the face of severe controversy in the press as he was better known for high-rise corporate offices rather than art galleries. But the intimate auditorium and series of galleries built by him has stood the test of time. The revamp that has been planned now will be headed by the architect Shohei Shigematsu and will include underground galleries and parking. The facilities and expansion of the gallery is expected to establish it as a proper competitor with the likes of the famous Guggenheim Museum.Click on the slideshow for more images. Read more
