The National Art Center, Tokyo is hosting “Tadao Ando: Endeavors,” the extraordinary architect’s half-century trail of endeavors and his visions for the future. Tadao Ando is a self-taught architect who began his architectural activities in 1969 as an “urban guerrilla.” Since then, he has been challenging preconceptions about architecture through novel designs. Over the past 30 years, Tadao has built his extraordinary presence around the world. The architect is deeply engaged with environmental restoration and post-disaster reconstruction projects. The drawings and models presented in the exhibition are organized into six sections - “Origins/Houses,” “Light,” “Void Spaces,” “Reading The Site,” “Building Upon What Exists, Creating That Which Does Not Exist,” and “Nurturing” - inviting the viewer to retrace Ando’s footprints and explore the richness and infinite potential of the field of architecture.Tadao Ando was born in Osaka in 1941 and established Tadao Ando Architect & Associates in 1969. He has been awarded the AIJ Prize in 1979, Japan Art Academy Prize in 1993, Pritzker Architecture Prize in 1995, UIA Gold Medal in 2005, Kennedy Center Gold Medal in the Arts in 2010, Shimpei Goto Award in 2010, Order of Culture (Japan) in 2010, Commander of the Order of Art and Letters (France) in 2015, Grand Officer of the Order of Merit (Italy) in 2015.
