The new look of the White House in Washington DC was unveiled recently, and it seems to have very few takers. In his review, The Guardian’s design critic calls the new carpeting “bland, forgettable and good for hiding the stains.”The 6,000 meters of new carpet (replacing the brown carpet of Obama’s time) in the West Wing features a floral medallion that is supposed to be inspired by the White House architecture and the Rose Garden. That’s not the only aspect of the new décor that has attracted brickbats. The creamy grey damask wallpaper of the Oval Office that the President personally chose doesn’t seem to be much of an improvement over its predecessor, a yellow candy-stripe wallpaper. Gold drapes and gold-hued upholstery dominate the new look, probably designed to communicate “luster and glory”. Walls painted in greige (a color between beige and grey) and recessed lights are too reminiscent of a corporate conference room.New stairs made of limestone mined in Indiana have replaced the stone ones of the South Portico staircase while the wisteria that once flowed down has been cut away, reportedly an unfortunate development. Eagles are a major leitmotif in the new décor with two eagle carvings over three feet tall resting in the large Roosevelt Room. A gilded eagle has also been installed in the Oval Office, with a chandelier in its talons. A stand in the West Wing lobby sports a tray engraved with the presidential seal. Reportedly, all of the new furnishings are “made in America.” Work on the interiors began after Trump left for his vacation in New Jersey, an expenditure of around $3.4. The White House has undergone several renovations in the past as well.Click here for a glimpse of the new look. Read more
