The Naomi Milgrom Foundation has unveiled the designs for its 2016 MPavilion by Indian architect Bijoy Jain of Studio Mumbai. The sensorial and elemental structure will be created using bamboo, stone, earth, and rope, exemplifying the ideals of the craft of building and handmade construction – a process that Jain describes as “Lore”The 12-metre-high bamboo structure will feature a roof encased in earth to represent the Australian landscape and will be adorned with an elaborate tower reminiscent of the “tazia” used in Indian ceremonies. The design testifies to Jain’s ongoing commitment to human and cultural connectedness as well as the act of creating.Jain says that the idea is to allow discoveries through visual layers of making, thinking, and seeing. “I wanted to create a space that connects the entire culture of the land,” says Jain. The architect describes the tower or “tazia” as an imaginary, otherworldly building that extends deep into the stars – a structure through which you can see the sky, stars, and other dimensions.According to the Naomi Milgrom Foundation, the pavilion is a gesture that reflects Jain’s interest in the connection between sky, earth, and the shared gravity that connects all of humanity. “I want the MPavilion to be the scaffolding that provides a creative space that suspends visitors between earth, ground and sky,” Jain explains.The Naomi Milgrom Foundation launched MPavilion project in 2014 as a series of four annual commissions.
