Christian Nilson presents his observations on Switzerland, his adopted home. He emigrated from Sweden at the age of eleven, and subsequently lived in Belgium, Germany, Switzerland, and other countries. During his life abroad, he always looked upon his temporary homes with a curious eye, becoming astutely skilful in capturing their quirks through the medium of street photography. Over the years, he has developed his own style in this way, allowing him to capture everyday moments before the stories escape from them. He manages to encapsulate the identity of the Swiss as they nonchalantly go about their daily business. One important tool he uses is the flash, which allows him to direct the viewer’s attention to the hidden characteristics of the Swiss. In doing so, he brings the shadowy aspects of life into focus, presenting the complexity of national identity in a very vivid way. The photographs were produced while doing reporting work or on commission, as well as on free days as he set out, full of adventurousness, to track down the stories, mannerisms and roots of Swiss identity.
