Oakland ‘raptivist’ hopes to shift false narratives of the Black community through art and music

A San Francisco Bay Area-based hip hop educational organization is fighting to stay afloat financially after local shelter-in-place orders forced the suspension of in-person operations. Hip Hop for Change is an educational nonprofit that teaches activism and self-expression to thousands of students through hip hop music, breakdancing, and graffiti art. Now with the global pandemic confining students to their homes, Hip Hop for Change has lost all of its school contracts, been forced to cancel its upcoming shows, and has had to furlough its entire grassroots staff. Its founder and executive director, Khafre Jay, is now searching for creative ways to continue to spread the organization’s message while waiting out the crisis.

Federal judge eviscerates Florida law barring felons from voting, ruling it a 'poll tax'

In a Sunday order, a federal judge has struck down in large part the Florida state law passed by Republicans that denied felons the restoration of their voting rights if they had not paid all fines, fees and other costs associated with their court appearances. The requirement constituted a poll tax, ruled U.S. District Judge Robert Hinkle, and therefore violated the 24th Amendment prohibitions on such. The details of the order (which can be found here) amount to a substantive, but not total, victory for opponents of the Florida law.

First annual Trans Immigrants Day honors the lives and legacies of trans women

The first annual Trans Immigrants Day honors trans people who died too soon, and vows to fight like hell for the living. Launched by the organizations Familia: Trans Queer Liberation Movement and the Black LGBTQ+ Migrant Project (BLMP), the first annual Trans Immigrants Day will take place May 31, preceded by a week of action beginning May 25 that includes banner drops, webinars about issues impacting trans immigrant communities, and a May 29 candlelight vigil in New York City honoring the life of Lorena Borjas, a trans immigrant activist who died March 30 of COVID-19. Borjas was a pillar in New York’s Queens community, where she helped trans women get tested for HIV, bailed out sex workers, and ran a nonprofit that helped provide legal representation to immigrants facing deportation. According to Oluchi Omeoga, a national organizer with BLMP, too often the immigrants’ rights movement forgets about LGBTQ+ people—especially Black LGBTQ+ immigrants—and the LGBTQ+ movement treats undocumented immigrants as an afterthought, if it thinks of them at all. BLMP and Familia unapologetically center LGBTQ+ immigrants, and honor the leadership of trans immigrants, the organizer told Prism.

Nuts & Bolts: Inside a Democratic campaign, the party moves for changes at the convention

It’s another Sunday, so for those who tune in, welcome to a diary discussing the Nuts & Bolts of a Democratic campaign. If you’ve missed out, you can catch up anytime: Just visit our group or follow the Nuts & Bolts Guide. Every week I try to tackle issues I’ve been asked about. With the help of other campaign workers and notes, we address how to improve and build better campaigns or explain issues that impact our party. Some weeks, I address issues facing the party as a whole. This week, I am looking ahead to the 2020 Democratic National Convention in Milwaukee. For those who follow my Twitter feed—@tmservo433—you occasionally will see a stream of #DNCRBC. This is the friendly hashtag for discussions around the Democratic National Committee’s Rules & Bylaws Committee, the body that helps to oversee issues that impact our party charter and structure. In a meeting this month, the Rules & Bylaws Committee passed a resolution allowing for significant changes to the way a convention could be held. Ballots were mailed out, and many have already been received and are on their way back to the party office. I’ve already written about why I think the convention should go away. Markos had similar thoughts in his analysis of why the nominee loses almost nothing. With the ballots in the hands of the voters, let’s talk about how we build our coalition based on this effort.
