Thursday night owls: Silicon Valley economy makes life tough for the precariate

Night Owls, a themed open thread, appears at Daily Kos seven days a week Lia Russell at The New Republic writes—The Silicon Valley Economy Is Here. And It’s a Nightmare. Low pay, soaring rents, and cities littered with e-scooters. Welcome to the future: The indignities of the gig economy are well established at this point, as the laissez-faire labor practices of companies like Uber, Instacart, Door Dash, and Lyft draw more critical scrutiny. Bain, Cotton, and their fellow shoppers are among the millions of precariously employed workers who rely on part-time jobs or side gigs to scrape together a living, all without the safety net of employer-based insurance.    But what is less widely acknowledged is how the gig economy interacts with other trends in California and forces unleashed by Silicon Valley—rising housing costs, choked infrastructure—to make life hell for those who live at or near the epicenter of America’s technology industry. Together, they constitute a nightmare vision of what the world would look like if it were run by our digital overlords, as they sit atop a growing underclass that does their shopping and drives their cars—all while barely able to make ends meet. By most official measures, California’s economy is humming. Its unemployment rate, at 3.9 percent, is at a record low. It is home to some of the world’s most valuable companies: Google, Apple, Facebook. As The New York Times noted in December, “Its median household income has grown about 17 percent since 2011, compared with about 10 percent nationally, adjusted for inflation.”  But the state’s affluence is spread unevenly, resulting in an increasingly bifurcated economy that privileges the wealthy at the expense of the middle class. This is particularly apparent in cities like San Francisco and San Diego, where the gig economy is most prevalent. Costs of living there are higher than elsewhere in the country, exacerbated by a housing market that, thanks to an influx of cash from the tech sector, has become prohibitively expensive for many people (and has also helped drive a spike in homelessness). TOP COMMENTS • HIGH IMPACT STORIES  QUOTATION “Anyone who believes that exponential growth can go on forever in a finite world is either a madman or an economist.” ~~Kenneth Boulding. U.S. Congress, Energy Reorganization Act of 1973: Hearings, Ninety-third Congress, First Session, on H.R. 11510 TWEET OF THE DAY xI don’t know what’s more revolting, Ivanka claiming she “gave up her life to move to DC and help people,” or NYT writing a funding profile of her shallow, self-serving corrupt self. https://t.co/7DVq4DAOZq— PR Queen (@PR_twit) January 24, 2020 BLAST FROM THE PAST At Daily Kos on this date in 2006—Extend debate on Alito: It seems clear to me that the significance of Alito's views on executive power, access to the courts, civil liberties, the right to privacy, the federal Commerce power, and a myriad of other issues, is only now coming into proper focus. More time is needed for the Senate to properly carry out its Constitutional function of advice and consent. An appointment to the Supreme Court is for a lifetime. Samuel Alito is 55 years old and, like Justice O'Connor, is likely to sit on the Court for a quarter century if confirmed. Given the stakes, an additional period of consideration and debate seems appropriate. The length of this additional period need not necessarily be long nor the debate protracted. It seems to me that with a fairly brief period of consideration, the members of the Senate can chart a course for appropriate action regarding Judge Alito. Thus, I urge the Senate, and in particular the Senators of the Democratic Caucus, to consider moving for extended debate to further consider the nomination of Judge Samuel Alito to the Supreme Court. On today’s Kagro in the Morning show: Rave reviews for Day 1 of the House managers’ opening arguments. Just plain raving from Trump. Greg Dworkin has one eye on the proceedings, and one on the polls. Defense set to argue that subpoenas were invalid, and a conviction is unconstitutional. x Embedded Content RadioPublic|LibSyn|YouTube|Patreon|Square Cash (Share code: Send $5, get $5!) Bank calls police on black man trying to deposit checks from racial discrimination settlement

Sauntore Thomas sued Enterprise Leasing Company of Detroit, his former employer, due to workplace racial discrimination and reached a confidential settlement. Thomas then brought the three settlement checks to the Livonia, Michigan, branch of TCF Bank that he says he’s used for almost two years. That’s where he experienced a fresh nightmare. The bank not only refused to cash or deposit his checks but actually called the police, as reported by the Detroit Free Press. Now, Thomas is suing the bank. «I didn't deserve treatment like that when I knew that the check was not fraudulent,» Thomas, who ended up closing his account with TCF Bank that Tuesday, Jan. 22, told the Free Press. «I'm a United States veteran. I have an honorable discharge from the Air Force. They discriminated against me because I'm black. None of this would have happened if I were white.»

Anti-trans bill that hurts both patients and doctors passes committee vote in South Dakota

In the latest blow to transgender people’s rights, a proposal to ban physicians from performing gender-affirming surgeries or prescribing puberty-blocking hormones for transgender youth has cleared the South Dakota House State Affairs Committee by an 8-5 vote as of Wednesday, Jan. 22. The bill, known as HB 1057, makes it a misdemeanor crime for physicians (though not nurses or medical assistants) to perform these medical procedures on people under 16 years old. The stakes are high, as the bill argues for the punishment of up to a year in jail and a fine not exceeding $2,000 for doctors, reports The Washington Post. An earlier version of this bill wanted to make it a felony. Mind you, a new study in the medical journal Pediatrics just came out today on the topic of transgender youth and puberty blockers. The findings? Transgender youth who are able to access puberty blockers report lower levels of mental health issues, including suicidal ideation.

Wuhan virus shows the absolute necessity, and difficulty, of controlling emerging diseases

The coronavirus that is spreading in and from China, known as the Wuhan virus after the city in which it was first detected, demonstrates how impossible it is to constrain the outbreak of a new disease vector—and how important it is to try anyway. This virus emerged in a highly developed area, was quickly recognized as a novel disease, and was met with prompt action. Even so, cases are now in at least six countries, including the United States. As of Wednesday morning, more than 20 million people in China are under travel restrictions, part of an effort to contain the outbreak. But with confirmation that the Wuhan virus is readily communicable person-to-person, it seems likely that it will continue to spread to other locations. So far it seems to be less lethal, in its current form, than the related SARS virus, which was identified in 2003. But that isn’t particularly comforting.

New clip of young Lindsey Graham talking about impeachment confirms his hypocrisy knows no bounds

Republican hypocrisy knows no bounds. It is hard to write this in new ways every few minutes, but it is the job of any honest person to acknowledge it. With Donald Trump’s impeachment trial playing out in the Senate and a Republican Party now actively colluding to cover up his crimes, old videos of very visible Republicans and Trump allies contradicting their current positions have started springing up. Sen. Lindsey Graham is one of the more obvious examples because his 180-degree turnabout on executive powers, the abuse of those powers, and the subject of impeachment is arguably the most transparent example of how craven the Republican Party has become in its amoral quest for power.  Dating back to Jan. 23, 1999, the clip below shows a younger Sen. Graham speaking at a press conference and basking in that camera limelight he so clearly desired and now requires.
