McConnell and Trump want to force schools to reopen, America strongly disagrees

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is now insisting that the next coronavirus relief bill won't pass unless it also makes schools reopen in the fall. That's not going to go over at all well with about two-thirds of voters who will be showing up at the polls this fall.  A hot-off-the-presses Yahoo/YouGov poll released Thursday shows the jeopardy Republicans are in if they keep pushing this: 63% of Americans say Trump should not be pressuring schools to reopen. Only 25% support Trump in pushing for schools to reopen. Just 15% say they want classes in their community to be conducted entirely in-person. Nearly three-quarters, 77%, say that the priority should be limiting the virus's spread, even if it means schools stay online only. Just 23% say the priority should be putting kids back in classrooms. What's more, 58% of Republicans say public health is more important than reopening schools, along with 95% of Democrats, 72% of independents, and 72% of parents of K-12 school kids. This is telling: «The only category of Americans who disagreed, by a slim 51 percent to 49 percent margin, was those who say they intend to vote for Trump in November.»

Georgia Gov. Kemp explicitly blocks cities from requiring masks, for the worst possible reason

On Wednesday, the United States reported over 1,000 COVID-19 deaths for the first time since June 9 as the spiking cases across the South reversed the trend generated when numerous states issued stay-at-home orders in April and May. With a better understanding of how the disease is spread, it’s become clear that use of face coverings is critical to reducing the rate of transmission. Short of a new, even broader stay-at-home order, masks are the most effective action the nation can take to break the back of the pandemic. So naturally masks have become a political point, with right-wing media and Republican politicians doing everything they can to send not just mixed messages, but spread the idea that wearing a mask is somehow, in an undefined way, a threat to “freedom.” Even so, Republican governors pinned between overcrowded hospitals, rising cases, and having to reverse themselves on statewide lockdowns have been revising their mask positions. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott went from preventing local governments from issuing mask orders to issuing his own statewide requirement, complete with fines for those who refuse. Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey didn’t issue a statewide order, but he did reverse himself and allow cities and counties to issue local orders. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis … did nothing, because he’s Ron DeSantis, and that’s just how he rolls. But it’s Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp who is really outstanding in his field in the worst possible way. Because on Wednesday, Kemp issued a new executive order to block mask requirements at every level.

As virus roars in Florida, in-person Republican convention still on—with way smaller crowds

As the novel coronavirus pandemic continues to roar, the Republican National Committee (RNC) is still planning to hold its national convention in Jacksonville, Florida, this August. As we know, Florida has become a hotbed for the virus as case numbers surge and hospitals report dwindling ICU availability. This surge of cases isn’t terribly surprising, given that people have flocked to Florida’s beaches, theme parks have already reopened, and Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis has basically buddied-up with Donald Trump on COVID-19 response. Even still, holding a convention amid the pandemic raises an extra level of concern. To this end, Party Chairperson Ronna McDaniel (who is in charge of planning the convention) has announced some changes, as first reported by The Washington Post.  “We can gather and put on a top-notch event that celebrates the incredible accomplishments of President Trump’s administration and his re-nomination for a second term—while also doing so in a safe and responsible manner,” the letter to RNC members reads in part, as reported by Politico. What does this “safe and responsible” manner look like during a global health crisis? Let’s break it down below.

Patrick Onyekwere imbues his photorealistic portraits with layers of emotion. Before sketching with blue, ballpoint pen, the Nigerian artist invites his subjects into a conversation about their lives, contemporary culture, and nature to establish the mood or story he’s hoping to convey. Their responses produce a collaborative endeavor that organically merges their perspectives and histories, which the artist translates to his artworks. Onyekwere collects a few snapshots of his subject for reference as he meticulously shades and crosshatches every inch of his hyperrealistic pieces. More
