The biannual award, which was founded in 1987 and comes with a prize money of €60,000, is considered the European continent’s most prestigious accolade for architects and granted to projects completed in the previous two years.According to the Fundació Mies van der Rohe, the 2017 edition sees an increase in participating countries, now 39, with Georgia, Moldova, and Ukraine joining the selection for the first time. With 28 nominations each, France and Spain are at the top of the list, followed by the UK with 19 nominated projects, and 17 in Germany and Italy.
