Pentagon says the cost of Trump's border fence could be measured in the lives of American troops

To build his pointless ecologically, economically, aesthetically, and historically awful border fence, Donald Trump is using the National Emergencies Act to dip into a hodgepodge of military projects and scoop out funds that were going to purchase little things like homes, schools, hospitals—and in at least one case, a practice facility for paratroopers. Which seems a little important. As The Washington Post reports, the cost of these projects might not just be in dollars, because some of them were designed to address situations that are genuinely life-threatening. Warning of dire consequences, the Pentagon notes that some of the homes that troops and their families are occupying currently aren’t just old, but they’re also loaded up with asbestos and other things that create hazardous living conditions. In other cases, Trump’s precious ammunition is being stored in facilities that aren’t fire-resistant or tough enough to handle potential explosions. The buildings to be replaced or upgraded included more warehouses with crumbling asbestos, a middle school infested with mold, and a training facility overrun by bats. Not only do these conditions represent a direct threat to military personnel, but the Pentagon also notes that they are “hurting military readiness” and damaging national security. So … Trump has declared a national emergency on the southern border, while military personnel are at risk and genuine threats to national security go unaddressed. Sounds about right. However, despite the apparent urgency now being expressed, a lot of these projects have gone unfunded for years, or even decades, not because someone at the White House pulled the plug, but because the Pentagon itself has a tendency to funnel money toward massive, costly projects such as new ships and fighter jets, even when those programs incur huge cost overruns. Especially when they incur overruns. In fact, it’s exactly because these other projects had not been finalized that the money was available for Trump. Had the Pentagon prioritized these programs to begin with, the NEA would not have left them vulnerable to being snatched away. The biggest mistake the Pentagon is making now is coming to Congress with these warnings rather than going to the man who took its dollars in the first place.

In new poll, Warren leads in first choice, second choice, and induction by 'magic wand'

A new post-debate poll shows Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren leading the field by multiple metrics among Democratic primary voters. The poll conducted by Civiqs for Data for Progress included both a pre-debate and post-debate sample, which showed very little change in voters' preferences. Following the debate, primary voters favored Warren as their first choice for Democratic nominee: Warren: 30% Biden: 24% Sanders: 14% Buttigieg: 6% Harris: 6% Warren also topped their list for second choice, while Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders and Vice President Joe Biden slipped to fourth and fifth, respectively, by that measure: Warren: 27% Harris: 11% Buttigieg: 11% Sanders: 10% Biden: 9% But Warren also dominated when voters were asked who they would choose if they could «wave a magic wand» and make any one of the Democratic candidates president: Warren: 30% Biden: 16% Sanders: 15% Buttigieg: 10% Harris: 9% Interestingly, Warren picks up her largest number of “second-choice” voters almost equally from Sanders and Harris supporters: 59% of Sanders supporters chose Warren second, while 57% of Harris supporters made Warren their second choice. Warren also picked up 37% of Biden supporters and 36% of Buttigieg supporters. Overall, Warren was the top second pick of every other top five candidates' voters. Warren voters, on the other hand, picked the following as their top 4 second choices: Sanders, 21%; Buttigieg, 21%, Harris, 20%; Biden, 13%.

White House disavows gun proposal that the (checks notes) White House is circulating in Congress

The Senate/White House/NRA gun kabuki continued Wednesday with a higher degree of incompetence than usual, which is because Trump. One part of the White House—represented by Attorney General William Barr and Legislative Director Eric Ueland—has been circulating a memo on Capitol Hill that would expand background checks to all commercial gun sales including gun shows. It's much narrower than the universal background check bill from the House. The checks would be conducted either through the existing Federal Firearm Licensees (FFLs) or through a newly created group of licensed transfer agents. Sellers could choose where records of transactions would be held. It does not cover private sales. But the fact that the document is coming from the White House doesn't mean the White House supports it. «Not even close,» says White House spokesperson Hogan Gidley. «The President has not signed off on anything yet but has been clear he wants meaningful solutions that actually protect the American people and could potentially prevent these tragedies from ever happening again,» he said. And the document that Barr and Ueland have been circulating? «That is not a White House document, and any suggestion to contrary is completely false.» Oh, okay. Sounds like maybe someone from the Hill maybe tipped off the NRA which then intervened with the White House to get them to disavow it. Because the NRA is not happy. It is «concerned about the White House's handling of the talks, according to one top NRA executive who was not authorized to speak publicly,» reports the Washington Post's Robert Costa, and the concern is being «quickly relayed to allies» the Hill. «NRA members and gun owners will not support the contents of this vague memo,» the executive told Costa. «It reads like a pathway to gun registration and confirms their worst fears.» Trump is likely not involved in any of this. He certainly hasn't sat through meetings in which the various former buyers and sellers are required to file and with whom have been discussed. But now that the NRA is freaking out, you can bet he'll be involved. And once again, nothing will happen to protect Americans from gun violence.
