Record attendance numbers and “significant institutional acquisitions” have made this year’s edition of Design Miami/ the most successful to date. According to the fair’s final report, which was published today, 37,900 collectors and visitors, as well as 31 galleries, attended the 12th edition, which ended last weekend.Attendance seems to have increased particularly among collectors and the “ultra high net worth clientele”: “We reached a certain stride this edition that a lot of collectors and gallerists felt strongly,” Rodman Primack, Chief Creative Officer of Design Miami, writes in a statement. “The mix of historic and contemporary in the program and the quality of the design satellites and collaborations drove attendance and sales to a very exciting height.”Among the noteworthy sales mentioned in the report are works by Misha Kahn, Wendell Castle, Chris Schanck, and the Campana Brothers at New York’s Friedman Benda; several pieces by Jean Royère to “important collectors” at Paris-based gallery Patrick Seguin; a tapestry and standing lamp by Le Corbusier at LAFFANOUR - Galerie Downtown of Paris, as well as the entire solo exhibition by Italian designer Gaetano Pesce at Salon 94, one of the five galleries attending the fair for the first time this year.Important institutions to make acquisitions at the fair included The Smithsonian Cooper Hewitt, The Metropolitan Museum of Art and The Mint Museum, among others.
