Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) in London is hosting its much-awaited exhibition “Mary Quant.” The show, the first international retrospective on the revolutionary fashion designer, will be on view through February 16, 2020.Dame Barbara Mary Quant personified the energy and fun of the ‘Swinging Sixties’ and was a powerful role model for working women. This exhibition focuses on Mary Quant’s work between 1955 and 1975 when she revolutionized the high street and young fashion with her playful designs and signature looks including the mini skirt, hot pants, trousers for women and colorful tights and make-up.For the exhibition, V&A had received unprecedented access to Dame Mary Quant’s Archive. In addition, V&A, which has the largest collection of Mary Quant garments in the world, brings together 200 items for this exhibition, many of which have never been on public display before. In June 2018, the museum issued a public call-out to track down rare Quant garments from wardrobes around the country. From an overwhelming 800 responses, the museum has chosen to display 35 objects, personal stories from the owners and 50 photographs of the women wearing their beloved Quant clothes.“Mary Quant transformed the fashion system, overturning the dominance of luxury couture from Paris. She dressed the liberated woman, freed from rules and regulations, and from dressing like their mothers. This long-overdue exhibition will show how Mary Quant’s brand connected with her customers, how she made designer fashion affordable for working women, and how her youthful, revolutionary clothes, inspired by London’s creative scene, made British street style the global influence it remains today,” says curator Jenny Lister.“The V&A is such a precious and iconic organization for which I have the utmost admiration and respect, and it is a huge honor to be recognized by them with this dedicated exhibition and book. It was a wonderfully exciting time and despite the frenetic, hard work we had enormous fun. We didn’t necessarily realize that what we were creating was pioneering, we were simply too busy relishing all the opportunities and embracing the results before rushing on to the next challenge!,” said Mary Quant. From small boutique to an international label, Quant revolutionized British fashion with energy, flair, and rebellion. This exhibition shows how Mary made high fashion affordable for working women, and how her youthful, revolutionary clothes made British street style a global influence. The exhibition will be on view through February 16, 2020, at the Victoria and Albert Museum, Cromwell Rd, Knightsbridge, London SW7 2RL, UK.For details, visit http://www.blouinartinfo.com/galleryguide/victoria-and-albert-museum/overviewClick on the slideshow for a sneak peek of the exhibition. https://www.blouinartinfo.com/ Founder: Louise Blouin Read more
