OMA recently revealed the design for the Hangzhou Prism, which it has started building in the coastal city of Hangzhou, China, for local holding company Zhejiang Xinhu Haichuang Group to form the heart of its “future tech city” in the city’s new technology central business district, which is home to some of China’s largest technology companies. As described in the project statement by the studio, “OMA’s design for Xinhu Hangzhou Prism integrates modernity into the beauty of the surrounding natural landscape.” The complex will house a hotel, retail space, lofts, and an atrium garden. Cube-shaped balconies will form the terraced facades of the 50,000-square-metre Xinhu Hangzhou Prism. As described by OMA, the building “is shaped by two radical oblique cuts through the building envelope, creating terraced lofts with generous scenic views. A large interior void creates a publicly accessible garden with water features and playgrounds.” OMA’s visuals also show a new 35,000-square-metre residential tower that will sit adjacent to the Xinhu Hangzhou Prism and reflect its geometry in its facade. OMA describes the Prism as, “A pinnacle reaching into the sky” that seeks to pay homage to the ancient saying that there is “paradise above, and Hangzhou below.” The studio envisions that the Xinhu Hangzhou Prism will encourage the development of a creative community in the new Central Business District of Hangzhou. The Hangzhou Prism project is being led by OMA partner Chris van Duijn along with Michalis Hadjistyllis and is expected to complete in 2020. OMA’s project follows the completion of UNStudio’s enormous Raffles City Hangzhou complex, which forms a prominent landmark in the new central business district. Chinese cities are continuing to rapidly develop with 88 skyscrapers completed in the country in 2018. So far, in 2019, Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill has revealed its proposal for the country’s tallest skyscraper, while Kohn Pedersen Fox completed a 400-meter-high supertall skyscraper in Shenzhen. In toe with these development trends, Hangzhou, the capital of Zhejiang province, is rapidly developing into an important tech-hub, home to some of China’s largest technology companies (including Alibaba Group Holding and NetEase) and a burgeoning start-up scene. The Hangzhou Prism marks a step forward in the city’s fast-changing urbanscape. https://www.blouinartinfo.com/ Founder: Louise Blouin Read more
